MSE News: Barclays offers switchers double rewards for a year

Does anyone know how connected Barclays and Barclaycard are these days?
I got married last summer and had a 0% credit card with Barclaycard, and seeing as it was going to be paid off I did not bother changing my name with them. It has been paid off now and I just need to get round to calling to close it, which I should do tomorrow.
I want to apply to Barclays as a new customer for this deal and will be doing so in my married name as all my ID, electoral roll etc are in that.
Will that cause issues if I already exist on their systems in a different name via Barclaycard, assuming they could match me up by DoB, address and NI number? Or are they separate systems anyway?0 -
Got £50 compensation for my complaint with being mis-advised by their staff.
Over the last 12 months, I have got £120 from my 3 complaints with Barclays.
They have also advised the advisor, that I will be seeing in branch to get my switch sorted, not to try to sell me anything. If he/she does, I will complain and just walk out.0 -
Tried to open an account but kept getting "Sorry". Phoned the customer service and was told that was because I have a saving account with them. So if you have a saving account with them, you can't open any current account online and have to go into a branch. What a silly rule!0

and vice versa.
I would assume that you are a new customer if you have never had a Barclay bank a/c. (Was that part of the switching deal?- I don't know as I have never banked with them anyway.)
What it might do is make it easier to identify you electronically- except you have a different name now!Being polite and pleasant doesn't cost anything!

Sent back the form asking for my signature.
Money has clearly gone in from other accounts.
Direct Debits have come out.
Signed up for PINSentry (bizarre this isn't automatic since you apparently need it to make payments) and logged in with my card.
I still get the "9802 - Sorry - you do not have any accounts from which we can set up a payment." Error.
Sorry that you're experiencing payment troubles with Barclays. If you want to read my experience it's post #147 and what i did to resolve issue. Hope it helps x.0 -

I've never had any kind of bank account with Barclay's bank, only the Barclaycard.
If they share systems then perhaps the best thing would be to change my name with Barclaycard now, keep it for the moment, and do the current account application/switch in a few weeks before the deal ends but after their systems have updated. I can cancel the card after that. As you say it might make it easier to ID me.
Thanks!0 -

Thanks!
But why would you cancel it now? If you use the Barclaycard once each month once the 'blue Rewards' are switched on you would earn an extra £1 pm. (for 2 years.) I am just going to make a small transaction each month.Being polite and pleasant doesn't cost anything!

I am not sure that's right. At https://www.barclays.co.uk/current-accounts/blue-rewards/ under "Rewards terms, conditions and eligibility" it says:
Platinum Barclaycard with Barclays Blue Rewards terms and conditions
If you apply for our Platinum Barclaycard with Barclays Blue Rewards card and are an existing Barclays current account customer, you could receive £1 cashback per month for up to 24 months from account opening, if you join (if you have not already) Barclays Blue Rewards.
My card isn't "Platinum with Barclays Blue Rewards" (which is a different card under their listed cards available to the standard Platinum BT card I had) and also that implies to me that you need to get a current account and then apply for that specific card, so an existing Barclaycard wouldn't qualify.
Very happy to be told I'm wrong in which case yes I will keep it!0 -

They are connected. Ish.
If you have a Barclaycard (or a Barclays mortgage, or an ISA) you'll have a customer record set up. This can sometimes make applying for further products simpler as the essential ID information may already be recorded.
If you're making a fresh application and enough of the details match an existing record this is sometimes automatically detected. Would a different surname be enough to throw it off? I have no idea but would be interested in knowing the outcome.
It's kind of a moot point though as you don't have to be a new customer to qualify for either of the promotions currently running? For the "double rewards in May" offer you just need to sign up for Blue Rewards for the first time this month. For the "12 months double rewards" offer you must perform a full account switch by the end of June, this can be to an existing Barclays account and you can already be a Blue Rewards customer.: )0 -
It's been asked by others a couple of times on here... but, as far as I could find, no answer as yet has been forthcoming:
Does anyone know if it has to be 2 different DDs?
I know the Terms don't say 'different' but I'd rather not have to have the argument & end up doing a mchambers...0
