Weirdly a long time ago when I was at college, the police came into the student union looking for people to take part in a line up. I was asked, much to my friend's amusement. So now I realise - I look shifty.
This is the answer I was looking for all along!0 -
Hoping someone can shed a bit of light on what you think is happening to me here
Recently started using the Sainsbury’s shop as you scan thing. No problem the first few times using it. Then a couple of weeks ago I got selected for a random check. So fair enough, wasn’t worried
They scanned 7 random items and one of them came back saying I hadn’t scanned it. I actually remember scanning it, but the checkout girl said that sometimes the wi-fi signal is weak and it doesn’t always fully pick up the times. I believed her thought nothing of it
Today, went back to Sainsbury’s. Thought I’d use the scan as you go thing again. Being aware that I may get selected for a random check as I was last time. So I went round double checking everything scanned ok, I even counted up the items and total. 30 items £50.60, made a note of it.
Before I selected the checkout button I checked one last time 30 items £50.60
Got selected for a random check
The lady scanned 7 items, and the 7th item satsumas came back saying I didn’t scan it. Now I’m 100% sure I did, I even remember the icon appearing on the list.
So I kicked off a bit this time. Hope it didn’t make me look guilty.
She took me to another till scanned all my shopping. 30 items £50.60. I told her before she scanned that it would come back up with 30 items
Never using the system again0 -
Interesting comments 😁. I am one such “ insider “ as I work on scan as you shop for one of the big supermarket chains and I’m happy to reveal what I know . From day one we were all told checks were random and indeed they are .dont get thinking that your past records of perfect scanning rates will lower your chances of getting checks. It’s not individualised , I personally believe it’s a lottery system . But first some background knowledge : since supermarkets began introducing self service /scan as you shop options to their stores “SHRINK “ has exploded . Shrink is basically the theft and money stores are loosing. Now here’s what’s interesting and something I’m currently at war with my supervisors about . The company I work for has a minimum % failure rate they want to attain on scan as you shop. The failure rate is completely down to customers failing to scan items and that we find them. The minimum failure rate they seek is 6%. In the beginning when I joined the department I was told we held a 12% rate. Over the next year it averaged between 3-5% and we all got a bollocking for not finding unscanned items. So the first thing management did was to secretly increase the number of items we check. So on the scanner it might say to check 5 items , but we’d do ten or more ...the % barely moved and we got another bollocking whilst we were left shrugging our shoulders. Next we were told to start doing random full checks on customers . Something that was originally designed for suspicious customers was now for anybody , just so we could hit this target . In the beginning we were told to do at least one full check an hour . I pointed out to my manager that I fully expected us to hit this target now , because it was introduced in the run up to Xmas and every year theft and honest mistakes spike at this time of year , but I warned him that (a) customer feedback was becoming increasingly negative and (b) that target rate would drop again in the new year. So for December we hit that 6% figure and the managers were joyous at last . Then came January and suddenly scan as you shop went very quiet and it’s still not recovered now we’re in the middle of February . We’ve been averaging about 5% and there’s certainally less and less customers using the system , my line managers solution? Now we do 2 full re scans per hour minimum on a smaller and smaller number of customers that use the service in order to hit this target . There are some days where it’s been a good hour and a half before I get to random check anybody which should be deeply concerning but our managers are thick as !!!!!! and a bunch of kiss !!!!!! mercenaries who don’t have the !!!!!! to say to head office :this ain’t working. Now here’s another thing , I argued with my store manager and supervisors on several occasions that infact rather than being a failing store , we were actually in truth one of the best BECAUSE of our low failure rate . Our job is to educate customers on how to properly use the service so that they make less mistakes . Customers find checks and mistakes highly embarrassing and I’ve seen how seriously they take it and want to avoid mistakes . This has led to a decline in failure rates which you would think would be a good thing and directly combatting shrink -but nah management just assumes your all thieves despite the daily numbers that show that roughly 4-5 % of all checks find at least one unscanned item and I can tell you now , that the vast majority of the time ALL we find is one unscanned item and it’s usually something first cheap and very likely a genuine mistake. In contrast , management have made ZERO effort into combatting shrink on the self service area which is where I believe we loose most stock . Customers often fail to press the “ pay now “ icon on screen and are unaware their contactless payments are not going through and from a single transaction , we can loose more stock and money on self service than a weeks worth of failed checks on scan as you shop . I can’t give U an exact figure as to the number of unpaid transactions per day on self service checkouts , but our receipt drawer is full of them ....and yet management never say anything about it ever.4
