I assume you shop in a slightly dodgy area where they need more staff to cover!

My self service checkout as one member of staff monitoring 6 tills.

My local usually only has one staff to cover the self scan and the scan and shop (this is in a 'well off' area), I rarely get checks in that store, I use another store near work (bit of a dodgy area) they have more staff on the self scan and scan and shop areas, and I get checked more regularly. But this dodgy store puts security tags on their sandwiches and even their bags for life.

a supermarket near me has security tags on their baskets
  • I’ve been using Tesco shop & scan every week for over 2 years and really liked it, though having accidentally double scanned items in the past and been overcharged, I always check the display unit to make sure each item has scanned correctly. I have usually been selected for a random search maybe once in every 8-10 visits on average and this has not been a problem. However, I have been stopped on the last 3 visits, the last 2 for a full rescan....both of which showed I had scanned every item. When I was stopped the second week in a row I commented that this was annoying as I had been stopped the previous week. The woman did not check any items when she said the scanner requested a full rescan. Reading earlier posts, now wonder if she pressed a button because of my comment. Luckily shop was quiet though it was still really embarrassing being pulled in. She then told me that I had scanned every item in my shopping. She also said they have increased the random checks. This week, I was selected again for a random scan - so now 3 weeks in a row. She then said a bottle of hand wash hadn’t been scanned - I had bought 2 identical bottles, had scanned one bottle twice (which I do all the time when buying multiple items) and it showed I had scanned 2. She said I was supposed to scan each bottle separately. I had to take it all to the till, unpack it and put whole shop through again. Also very embarrassing. I will never use it again.

I only supermarket shop about once a month and tend to alternate between waitrose, tesco & sainsburys. Because of the time interval I often get a random scan at tesco, but not necessarily the other 2. I have been using self scan since it started.

Why get embarrassed about being pulled over for a rescan ?

I think the scanners might know where they've been in the shop. If I walk down the alcohol aisle but don't buy anything, I always get a "random" check.

Also, I normally spend £5 to £10 per shop. If I spend more than that, say £40, I always get a check too. Maybe they think I could've slipped a few extra times in?

I would argue if the system worked that you didn’t get checked again the shop after you were pulled up for a random check that there was a major flaw in the system that could be exploited 😉

The bar code of two identical items is the same so if you had a mismatch on two identical products then they were not identical. You must have made an accidental mistake.

I like scan as you shop, it’s quick and efficient. When I get stopped I don’t think I’m being accused of being a thief. I just think this is the occasional price I pay for an excellent shopping experience.

There is no way for a dumb scanner to know that the 2nd bottle was separate - the barcode is identical.

So either you or the shop are very mistaken on this. You can scan 1 thing multiple times if they are identical.

The problem arises where someone has put a nearly identical item back in the wrong place.

For example, you might find a can of un-chopped tomatoes in a tray of chopped ones. The labels may be nearly identical.

It's a counsel of perfection to say 'scan every item separately', but if you want to be 100% sure, it's the only way.
  • Used Asda,s the other day bought one item a pizza guess what random check _ Even the cashier could see the irony and pointless of that particular check
