I didn't even realise this was my original thread! Well it was 18 months ago and I'm pretty sure my alternative "how to look less suspicious in a supermarket" thread was a figment of my imagination.

The only checks, including this morning, I have had is for 5 items. Never seen a "scan nearly every item" being done. I have had a couple of consecutive shop checks though.

Maybe OP only bought 6 items? :D

So now 18 months later I have been to a variety of supermarkets and use the scanners at Asda and Tesco most often. I still have the same gripe. I have been checked once in 8 times at Asda - nothing unscanned found.

I have been checked 4 times in 9 at Tesco. I really have no idea why or what their algorithm may be. The shopping is always different, sometimes when checked there hasn't been anything above £5 in my shopping, nor any meat. I also haven't done any returns onto the shelf.

So I am now checked every other time I use scan 'n shop, despite having never had any item found in my bag that wasn't scanned properly. Last time I had £28 worth of shopping with nothing more than £3. I was checked.

Am I angry? No. Am I annoyed? Yes. They should have the idea by now I'm not missing anything or nicking stuff. Unless (as Mrs Rob suggested) I'm keeping a clean record in preparation for a really big theft.

    The use the normal checkouts.
If there was a known system to the checks, people would make sure they get through them to then go on a steal.
I don't know why some people get so worked up by these random checks.

I'm looking for the smoothest, quickest path to get from a shopping trolley full of items into the car park. A checkout queue is normally slower than the scan n shop - especially the Mrs Brady factor.

The random check wouldn't be so bad if there were enough staff to attend to all the issues at the self scanning and scan n shop terminals. When it all works it's fast. When you get specially selected it can be a few minute wait to get attended to. But don't fret, I keep my worked-upness to myself and am politeness personified.

I can live with being checked periodically and don't require to know their algorithm for deciding whether to stop me. All I require is
    a. it isn't too frequent so that it ends up slower than the check out queue and
    b. The person who does the check is polite/civil which nearly all of them are.
  • I wonder if the opp resembles a known to Tesco regular shoplifter? Then perhaps the security person can press a hidden button to get the opp checked.

If you ever scan something but decide to put it back that guarantees that you will get inspected, well that's my experience anyway

I find in the evening I have to wait for the young girl to get off her phone to come over for the service check, which is annoying when you are shopping on the way home from work and want your dinner.
