Tesco Scan n Shop - random checks
Comments
-
We've been checked about 1 in 3 times at tesco and we wouldn't use s&s unless we were buying at least a normal weekly shop.
To be fair at our local (large) store they usually have a member of staff there permanently.
Not a major issue, but I've been known to abandon shopping at the till in other shops if no one seems to be taking any interest in resolving issues and I hope most professional shops take note of this as it's a very good example of how poor staffing costs them money.
I mentioned Waitrose and in fact the staff are pretty good.
We do our main shopping at Sainsbury's and the staff are excellent - no complaints at all.0 -
I'd used the S&S service 4 times and on each one I was selected for a check. The first few times they checked every item. The fourth time I moaned about the checks as it was making using that service slower than self service. She then proceeded to only check 5 items which was much better but it's still a pain if it's every time you use them. There's a storm coming, Mr Johnson. You and your friends better batten down the hatches, because when it hits, you're all gonna wonder how you ever thought you could live so large and leave so little for the rest of us.0

We regularly use S&S and are checked at times, inc for 3 items. Just be aware that if you scan different varieties of the same item (same price, size etc) scan each 'flavour' separately.
We didn't once and were selected for a Random, because the items didn't match we had a full search. 5 bags worth, we've remembered ever since.

Whether or not you get picked is random but if the Tesco employee has some concerns about the shopper they can subtly press a button on the terminal which makes them scans every item.
I did wonder about that.
I've only had the 5 items re-scan, they usually take a one or two items out of each bag and I've always passed. They don't seem to happen that often but when they do it's more often after I've removed things on the handset.
I didn't even know they did full re-scans but a few weeks ago two women went through together with one trolley between them but with 2 handsets. One woman paid the other got a re-scan, I was surprised when I heard the assistant claim she had to scan every item, what you've said makes sense as she was clearly suspicious of all the women's shopping mixed together.
I've never been checked in Waitrose. Sainsbury's is a pain as they always re-scan the whole shop, they went through a phase of checking me everytime I didn't buy a joint of meet. It got to the point where if I didn't intend buying a Sunday joint I wouldn't bother with self-scan.Accept your past without regret, handle your present with confidence and face your future without fear0 -

That would be the oddest algorithm if generally true. It would suggest people who don't buy a joint are more likely to make "mistakes".0 -

I think it was more personal, if I didn't buy a joint i'd made a 'mistake', for other's it could be a different regularly bought item.
It also happened a few times after one of my cats died and I started buying 6 cans of cat food instead of 12.Accept your past without regret, handle your present with confidence and face your future without fear0 -
Someone told me that if you keep scanning then later removing them then you are certain to get checkedThis is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0

This thread caught my eye because the last 5 or 6 times we've used the self-scan we've been marked for checking. I actually told the assistant this time would be the last time I used self-scan because it's now taking longer to go through there than it is to go through a manned check out.0

I doubt they really cared, after all self scan has meant some cashiers have lost their jobs.
I like self scan it is quicker and also you know exactly how much your shopping will cost when you come to pay for it.0
