@greenbee great minds! We had rice pudding after, with a very few raspberries off the allotment.
  • Had another crackers and cheese day today after spending the day in some glorious gardens courtesy of the NGS yellow book scheme. Eaten with homemade blackberry chutney, windfall apples and all the salad bits and bobs I could find in the fridge and followed by blackberries and a coffee.

It's freezer foraging tonight.  I think there's a couple of baguettes that can be baked too.  In the freezer there's french savoury pastries (spinach & goat cheese or ham and gruyere flaky pastry things) as well as little breaded camemberts.  There's also a bag of tiddly prawns (but no avocado....boo hiss) and there's ham in the fridge.  I might even have one of the 4 tomatoes from the garden - I so do not have green thumbs!

Its been a rubbish year for tomatoes this year, not enough sun. My small crop has only just started turning red in the past couple of weeks. It's prob cost me more in water to keep them than if I'd bought them at the supermarket.

I was just in the greenhouse a few moments ago, lamenting how green all the tomatoes still are. I've had a few nice ripe ones, but mostly there are pounds and pounds of green ones. The chillis have all ripened beautifully though *shrugs*.

Roast beef and all the trimmings for us tonight (apologies to all vegetarians who are playing along!). It was quite a large expensive joint so I am hoping to get several more meals out of it, to keep the cost-per-portion reasonable. Cottage pie with loads of veg should yield another four meals, and I expect I can shred some to add to peppers etc as fajita fillings.

2 tomato plants purchased at £1 each and 2 tomatoes off each of them.  Probably get better value at Fortnum & Masons!  5 free chilli plants and 2 chillis, one of which is now ripening.  Will have to check the labels to ensure it's something we'll be able to eat - there was a scotch bonnet plant.....

There are lots more interesting recipes out there for green tomatoes than chutney. You can only eat so much of it. My tomatoes got blight, so had a lot of green tomatoes to process. Most of them were turned into a tomato sauce and frozen, but we made lots of other things, including a very popular cake.
  • gammon, cauli cheese, HM yorkshires. Thought I'd ordered potatoes with the shopping the other night, but didn't, so no potatoes tonight but then hit on the idea of the Yorkshire puddings. Custard slices from Iceland for pudding.
