Took honey, black pudding and stout sausages from freezer hoping that with mash, turnip and onion gravy we would have a nice, unusual dinner......unfortunately nobody liked the sausages,.so feeling let down. Hey ho, tomorrow is another day!

Hi all, I hope you dont mind me joining in.

Tonight I fancied comforting food, I am a student nurse and began a new placement, I am always tired at the end of the first day as nerves get the better of me :( Anyways, we had Scrambled egg, beans and toast.

Mr_Singleton, this sounded very tasty so hunted around online and found the recipe. Do you follow the recipe to the letter, especially doing the thing with the Tomatoes or do you have an alternative way?

I assume you mean did I blitz the tomatoes in the food processor..... yes although I used an immersion blender.

So, 95% of the time I cook a recipe for the first time I follow the ingredients list and technique to the letter. It’s more to do with wanting to get the authentic experience. I rarely cook the same meal more than twice as I have so many recipes I’d like to try especially as my cookbook collection just keeps expanding. Got ‘Ethiopia: Recipes and traditions from the horn of Africa’ by Yohanis Gebreyesus with Jeff Koehler yesterday so will be trying something from it at the weekend.

Would definitely give the recipe a go especially for a Sunday night supper after a long day outside in the cold!

Tonight, had “Swiss chard frittata” from ‘The Book of Greens: A Cook's Compendium of 40 Varieties, from Arugula to Watercress’ by Jenn Louis and Kathleen Squires page 78. Mainly because while buying some lunch in Waitrose this afternoon I noticed some lovely looking rainbow/Swiss chard coupled with needing to use up some eggs.

Where do you get all your recipe's from?
Tortilla pizza, southern fried chicken burgers to name just a couple.
I'm stuck in a food rut and want to try new things as I'm getting bored of cooking and eating the same things.

I have an indecent number of cookbooks but it’s quite possible to find decent recipes online. YouTube is good and shows you the techniques as well. The online version of newspapers is also a good place to look. Also don’t forget your library! Use it or lose it as they say.

    Hi
For my dinner tonight I made a spicy beef and bean hotpot, but used quorn mince instead of beef. First time doing it and it was OK but I think I will put a bit more chilli in it to make it spicier next time

Mr_Singleton, You are right, it does sound like a Sunday supper so I may well give it a go, although I don't like smoked bacon so will stick to unsmoked.

I'm stuck in a food rut and want to try new things as I'm getting bored of cooking and eating the same things.

Tortilla pizzas are just a tortilla wrap with tomato sauce:

..then topped with mozzarella, peppers mushrooms pepperoni onion etc. Also a sprinkle of dried oregano and basil. Only take about 10 mins to bake. Once they're cooked, put them on a rack for a couple of minutes for the base to crisp up.

The chicken burger recipe I got from here:

  • We went shopping this morning and it took longer than we'd anticipated so a scratch lunch of veggie burgers from the freezer and reheated veg from the fridge with some instant gravy, it was hot and nice too. Supper this evening will be the lentil soup that I'd intended making for lunch and it's got the turkey stock I made with the bones that was in the freezer in it to use it up. It's simmering gently on the range and making the whole house smell nice.
