I made the curried lentil soup yesterday from this page Yotam Ottolenghi’s lentil recipes | Food | The Guardian and threw in a couple of mushrooms as well and it came out exactly like the photo and tasting delicious. I ate it with some wholemeal toast and a glass of wine.4

So, I know this isn’t quite on topic for this thread, but was wondering how, in general you guys grocery shop? I generally meal plan, then go shopping once a week, with a monthly meat delivery, but thinking of changing to shopping every couple of days for what I actually need.
DH and I are having a lunch out today at our favourite restaurant as a pre valentine treat 🥰Note to self - STOP SPENDING MONEY !!

@Islandmaid I generally get a big delivered Sainsbury shop roughly every eight weeks to bulk buy all the things I can’t get from Aldi. I get the meat once a month from the butcher, and do a weekly Aldi/Community Larder/Farmers Market shop for everything else. I don’t really have the time to shop every few days (we’re not near anything, so it’s a bit of a jaunt to the shops) and I’m sure I would spend more by shopping more frequently, but I do wonder if I am missing out on supermarket YS bargains.
If I lived closer to the shops, I’d definitely consider using them as my pantry.
We’re out for a pub lunch today, a family get together with cousins I don’t see often enough - so looking forward to it.3 -
Big pork chops complete with kidney to be grilled tonight. I'd bbq them but not sure I can get the bbq to work - hasn't been used for months unfortunately (on my to do list.....). To be served with mash and broccolli. I use the frozen mash as I'm lazy and have always had a problem with it burning a bit. Have figured out this is due to putting a bit of butter in the pan first. Last time I did the mash I used olive oil instead which didn't burn, tasted great, is better for us and prevented me from needing any extra butter to be added. We shouldn't have afters but I discovered a bag of Lidl frozen kaiserschmarm (austrian chopped pancakes normally served with cherries) so might think about having that just to clear things away.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on Debt Free Wannabe, Old Style Money Saving and Pensions boards. @Islandmaid i tend to do a big shop randomly when I have time and smaller shops in the week as and when needed, usually when I'm passing places. I generally don't have time to spend a good part of the afternoon in a supermarket at the weekend thesr days (nor the desire to) and refuse to pay delivery for online deliveries.Feb 2015 NSD Challenge 8/12JAN NSD 11/16

@Islandmaid. I never have a set pattern but I tend to have a freezer full of proteins, and other essentials. I then do a weekend shop, for the fresh stuff. Of late it's been an Asda click and collect at 8am on a Saturday morning. Husband is an early riser so he fetches it and puts it away. It costs 50p. I'm not sure if its because it's a earlier slot but rarely is anything not available.
I rarely spend above £40. We do however have a company shop that I pass on the way home from work. I pop in once or twice a week and grab a few bargains, in fact that's where a lot of the protein in the freezers come from.
Today its gammon and roast potatoes etc, but I had my covid booster yesterday and am feeling a bit rough so its pasta for me.5 -
@Islandmaid - I do similar to @JIL. I have two freezers full of various proteins (I tend to do a 3 monthly Costco shop for these and cupboard essentials such as rice and pasta), bread, pizza and oven chips etc for easy meals, and then I do a weekly fresh shop, either in person or via online delivery. I’ve recently gone back to Sainsbury’s and have been using their 6-10am £1 saver slot when DH is WFH just in case I’m out. It normally arrives between 6:30 & 7:30am and everything is generally available. As the kids are still of school age we’re generally up by 6:30 anyway so it gets the shopping out of the way!Tonight we’re having keralan chicken curry with rice and a tray of Indian snacks from the freezer.Books read 2023 - 49/754

We're having roast beef tonight. Got sent a very small piece in the click and collect order but we've got 3 Yorkshire puddings in the freezer, I've peeled and diced an extra potato, and Mr VH can have a pile of peas on top of the carrots and broccoli."You won't bloom until you're planted" - Graffiti spotted in Newcastle.
