Found quite a bit of info re War Dogs WW1 yesterday evening ....
In 1917 the British War Dog School opened in Shoeburyness. Dogs
were used as messengers, guard dogs and by the Red Cross. One
particular Airedale, Jack, had a vital role in saving his whole
battalion
Remembering the War Dog school at Shoeburyness
You’ve probably heard of 'War Horse' the famous West End play,
but the military also used dogs in the Great War and a special
school to train them was set up at the Shoeburyness ‘New Ranges’
in 1917 by Lt-Col E. H. Richardson. This followed successful trial
use of Airedale Terriers ‘Wolf’ and ‘Prince’.
The Dogs were trained as messengers, sentries and for patrolling
and up to 48 dogs and 16 handlers were based in kennels along
the front lines.
Dogs were initially sourced from Battersea Home for Lost Dogs but
later the public were asked to ‘volunteer’ their pets with the
promise they would be well fed.
The ‘War Dog School’ used the existing gunnery ranges at
Shoeburyness to accustom the dogs to trenches and the noise of
war, and trained them with food to run towards rifle fire.
They could cover 3 miles in 20 minutes and their nimbleness,
speed and size meant that injuries during the bombardments were
generally avoided, although many were injured or killed in action.
The photo below shows training in progress ....
Two further photo’s show dogs in service. The first shows how a
pouch was used to carry the vital communications and the second
shows a ‘dog barracks’. As can be seen a great variety of breeds
were used.
The use of dogs in war, and of course Policing, continues to this
day, but now the roles are for search and rescue, explosives
detection and guard duties. You may often see our British
Transport Police colleagues out and about at stations with their
dogs >>>

..... also had a very emotional five minutes this morning,
watching both the Military Wives Choir & Joey, the war horse
on GMB.

I always shed a few tears remembering not only men, woman
(including military personnel) & children who lost their lives in
the wars, but also all the animals.

Remembrance tomorrow evening. :A
Think I've waffled on long enough!Just noticed the
birdies have eaten all the fat balls, so that's the next job on
list of things to do, thankfully I bought some more the other
day. They're definitely very popular!
Have a lovely rest of the day all and please take care
whatever your plans.

Hi all. Funny sort of day here sunny then dull. Rain due later.
Well done on wins I Love comps. Love winning tickets.
I had a WEM this morning to say I had won a family ticket to the opening of a Christmas special lights at an historic house. An hour later I had an email to say it was a mistake I was not a winner. This has never happened to me before.
Pleased Charlie is ok Indie. Hope you have a restful few days off. Had to smile reading your post as I had the same idea of trying to get ahead with comps. I have done quite well picking up Christmas presents so more ahead than usual with that.
Take care everyone especially if you are effected by all the rain.

Watch the Iceland Christmas advert that has been banned from TV
It's been blocked from TV screens for being too political
https://youtu.be/JdpspllWI2o
Supermarket Iceland has seen its Christmas advert blocked from
TV screens for being too political.
The commercial, voiced by actress Emma Thompson and originally
produced by Greenpeace, features a cartoon orangutan and
highlights the plight of the rainforest.
Clearcast, the body which approves or rejects adverts for
broadcast on television and video on demand, said it was
"concerned'' that the commercial "doesn't comply'' with legislation
on political advertising.
It added that Greenpeace had "not yet been able to demonstrate
compliance in this area''.
Since Iceland posted the "banned'' video online it has since
received thousands of shares on social media, which is not
regulated in the same way.
The company tweeted: "You won't see our Christmas advert on TV
this year, because it was banned. But we want to share Rang-tan's
story with you... Will you help us share the story?'' :T
The advert focuses on the impact of palm oil on deforestation, and
follows the supermarket's decision to remove the product from all
its own-label food by the end of 2018.
Greenpeace said the commercial was not originally intended for
television, but neither they or Clearcast were able to immediately
confirm whether it had been previously submitted for broadcast
clearance.
Iceland said it had spent £500,000 on putting its campaign
together and insisted it had booked a number of prime-time TV
slots with the full intention of having it cleared to air over
Christmas.
Richard Walker, managing director at Iceland, said: "Whilst our
advert sadly never made it to TV screens, we are hopeful that
consumers will take to social media to view the film, which raises
awareness of an important global issue." :T

:hello: Good morning everyone
I hope you're all in fine fettle today.
We ended up with a bit of a hooley here yesterday evening/
through the night! I was expecting a bit of damage this
morning, but thankfully everything is still upright and in the
correct place. Zillions of leaves are now covering the
lawns and another million ready to drop!
I think the next few days are going to be a mix of sunshine,
wind & heavy showers.
I know what I'll be doing between the rain showers .....
I also had my IP address banned by admin yesterday
evening! I filled in the form (as requested), & duly
sent it off. First thing this morning I cleared all my cookies
etc (long overdue), closed the lappy down, turned off
the router and then started it all up again. Hey presto, I
got back in. Luckily I remembered having to do that the last
time it happened!
I had a WEM this morning to say I had won a family ticket to the opening of a Christmas special lights at an historic house. An hour later I had an email to say it was a mistake I was not a winner. This has never happened to me before.
You're not the only one leanfun .... that happened to me years
ago. I received a congrats email then another very apologetic
email to say they'd made a mistake. They did make up for it
though by sending me a parcel of a few consolation goodies a
little while later.
Sun's shining away here at the mo, not sure for how long
though!
Have a lovely & lucky Saturday all and please take care
whatever your plans.

Morning sunny here this morning.
Alfie pleased to hear you are back on. I’ve tried to take note of what you did. I need to clear cookies too. Yes, was disappointed over these tickets as it had cheered me up for an hour but Ce la vie or whatever the saying is. Sorry to hear it happened to you too.
Lo Alfie at all your leaves. We once had an ornamental cherry tree and it took ages clearing all the leaves.
Hope everyone had a good weekend whatever you are doing.0 -

Good Morning,
Pretty miserable morning here and been lots of rain through the night.
This area is looking fairly flooded. Got a shock as we were heading home. DD said she had been having bother driving from Stranraer through the week with surface water etc. It is the main Euro route with loads of HGVs heading for ferry so not good in heavy rain.
Anyway, we had a nice little break doing a variety of things - fireworks, walking along River Clyde (various locations), visiting Loch Lomond, Helensburgh and then Glasgow and the Transport Museum. Managed a little shopping too including some black jeans I like which is always difficult these days and got some little xmas presents too.
Must try and get some comps done though.
Have been keeping up with what you were all up to.
