  • I am with OTM now since February this year. I was with them previously but left when the direct debits went badly and lost confidence. I rejoined because the market comparison sites kept putting them as the cheapest in my case and my reasoning was if they survived from the earlier problems something must be OK. My choice was a fixed tariff for 12 months anticipating the market might rise. Even with the recent drops in prices it has never reached a point where I would change. Having smart meters installed I hoped they would still work but OTM were upfront in telling me that even as a SMETS 2 they wouldnโ€™t as their roll out is not in place. So far everything has been fine and I always get a quick response using the chat service. The first bill was wrong for gas because they took it as standard meter but as SMETS2 it already reads in M3 and they recalculated quickly when I pointed that out. As I recently renovated my house whilst living elsewhere my industry averages were low compared to my actual usage so unusually my account started to move into debit. To their credit they did not make any changes during the Covid period and only last month has it increased to bring the account into credit and this will still take a few months. My annual estimate seems to be increasing now to reflect usage. In my experience with each new supplier it is this figure they have to use when calculating DD and this has worked in my favour unusually this time. In summary so far I am happy and saving and so far the experience has improved from before so I am happy that these smaller companies are challenging the market.

From 1 October the standard variable rate energy price cap will fall by ยฃ84 to ยฃ1,042, however, with Outfox the Market their standard variable rate for medium consumption in my region is only ยฃ743.64!

In reading the above posts, apparently those of us with OFTM should be prepared for a 70/30 alteration to our direct debits, starting October. So say you use ยฃ1200 per year, which on an even payment scheme is ยฃ100 a month. Let's say for 6 months Oct - Mar) they want 70% (ยฃ840) over 6 months, or ยฃ140 a month. Unless there are other reasons any one would care to point out, then current customers of OFTM who have had no reason to complain up to now (myself included) should simply prepare themselves financially for an increase to their DD during the heavier usage period of the year. If they keep the payments (in the example above) at ยฃ100 per month, all is fine. If they do increase the payments to ยฃ140 per month - you are prepared.

Unfortunately there will be a lot of people who are simply unable to financially prepare themselves for a change like that.

Unfortunately there are/will be a lot of customers of all energy companies who end up in debt following winter months many of whom not able to repay what they have used, some blame the energy companies for not increasing direct debits. :/

This is a very valid point - IF you have built up a large enough credit over the April - Sept period to cover the larger usage during OCT - MARCH, then it would be unfair to raise Direct Debit. So people need to be prepared for a larger Direct Debit IF they have not built up a sufficient credit during the warmer months. Otherwise they will owe a large sum come April 2021.

Does anyone know if OFM payments qualify for the Santander 2% cashback please? I cannot find them on the Santander list as OFM or Foxglove and wondered if the payments come under another name.Thanks.ย

I moved from Yorkshire Energy to Outfox the Market at the end of June. Move went smoothly and my electricity bills are lower by 17%. Went down from ยฃ43-44 to ยฃ36. I have Economy 7 meter but calculated it will be cheaper to be on flat tariff with OTM. I can finally run dishwasher and washer during the day, don't have to remember to switch on everything on timer in the evening.

Looks like Neon Reef and Symbio take the same approach.

If you're not interested in getting the savings from having a cheaper night rate then this approach is likely better for you.

Suppliers offering the same rates for day/night shows that youย need to know your own usage - if you just usage the mediumย  consumption then you wont' receive accurate pricing from companies who just play the 'average medium tariff' algorithm on comparison sites.

Symbio don't take the same approach because if you have an Economy 7 meter, you can only have an Economy 7 tariff, which is more expensive than Outfox the Market for my 20% usage at night!
