Since I've joined the Grocery Challenge for the first time this month, I thought I may as well coincide it with my first visit to Lidl.

TBH, at the moment, I only need basics, so am asking for people's opinions on what Lidl are like for the following items?

    - semi-skimmed milk
    - bread rolls
    - sliced bread
    - bananas
    - leeks
    - mushrooms
    - sliced ham (for sandwiches, not wafer thin stuff)
    - salad bits - lettuce, tomatoes, cucumber
    - chicken breasts (boneless)

Are there any items on the above list that you wouldn't buy from Lidl for whatever reason? Is Lidl the best place to go for them?

Being a newbie, I don't know what Lidl's like. I think they're a German supermarket, so I'm presuming that they have lots of German brands, rather than just one brand? If so, are there some brands that are better than others?

I read on another thread about having to make sure your trollies are the right way around in Aldi (which I've never been to either). Are there any rules like this that I should know about in Lidl? Don't want to go embarrassing myself!

Sorry for all the questions...just don't want to look stupid when I'm in there on a busy Saturday morning!!

    Hiya :)

We have a few threads on lidls and the one here that I have just added your post to is the one that will help you most with your quest. Posts are listed in date order, so you will need to read from the beginning to catch up.

    Good luck. :)

    Hi there,

I don't see a problem with any of your items on the list for Lidls. They sell all of that stuff and its all perfectly find quality wise. When I was there on Saturday the fruit and veg was half price - I don't know if it's still on.

Thanks to this board, I planned my menus for the whole of April and did a massive Lidl shop. It came to just under £80.00. When I got back, I did the same shop online at Tesco and it came to just over £130.00! What a saving. I have had to do a top-up shop at Tesco for things that Lidl don't do, though (skimmed milk, fresh spinach, wholewheat pasta etc etc). I'm hoping that all I will have to buy for the rest of April is top-up fruit/veg/milk. It will be very interesting to see what else I'm going to need, as this is the first time I've planned for a month. I tried to think of wash up liquid, wash powder, toothpaste, toilet roll, etc etc but there's bound to be something I've missed for the first month.

Good luck for your first visit - I'm a convert!

    Kind regards

Thank you Rumbly. I'm looking forward to my first visit now.

I was thinking about going tonight, but have changed my mind -

    1) I'm not sure how much fruit/veg they'll have at the end of the day
    2) It's kind of cheating as my April Grocery Challenge doesn't officially start until tomorrow and the food I'll be buying is for the first couple of weeks for April.

So now, I am planning on going quite early in the morning, hopefully when it isn't too busy, so I can take the time to look around and see what there is.

What's a car park sale? I must be being blonde...I can only think of two things:

    1) selling their carpark
    2) selling their food, etc. in the carpark instead of in the shop.

I can't see it would be number 1 :rotfl: but is it really number 2?
