Whats Good Value At Lidls?

Hi
I normally shop from Asda with the occasional "posh shop" from Ocado/Waitrose. I have never shopped at Lidls and have heard pretty good things from people here on this forum.
What is so good about it and what do they sell and what is the quality like?
What do you buy and recomend from Lidls and can you put down cost too please, so I can compare?
Thanks

I asked this and got lots of good advice like take a pound for the trolley and your own bags. Don't try to pack your shopping like you do in Asda, do it after you've paid or take big trolley bags like I do. And you can pay by debit card but not credit card although this might be changing/changed.
I like Lidls for cherry jam, parmesan, chocolate, fruit juice and chewing gum for OH. Could guess at prices but someone more clued up will probably post exact prices. I know cartons of apple juice are about the same as Asda but you get 1.5litres rather than a litre. Chewing gum is 45p a pack, jam is about 70p but much nicer than jam for the same price in Asda.
Will see if I can find this week's receipt.

I think Lidl is great, though not necessarily for a whole shop. I think it's worth visiting when you're not in a rush and walking slowly round the aisles to familiarize yourself with what they have!
I signed up to their email newsletter (from their website) and they send me a list of special offers each week, though this tends to be non-food items.
On the grocery side, I recently bought Del Monte bananas for 74p per kg (cheaper than Tesco's though not as cheap as their value brand - but these were Del Monte); Diet Pepsi 2litre for 69p; orange and apple juice at 57p per 1.5 litres; cleaning wipes at £1.39 for 80; croissants for 79p for 8; crumpets 19p for 6; jaffa cakes (these are MUCH nicer than Jacobs) for 59p; own brand Fruit and Fibre for 95p. Their veg is really good quality - much better than Tesco's - and so is their meat. Go and have a look!
They have the fastest checkout people in the world - as Magentasue says, take a pound for the trolley and a load of bags (you have to pay for theirs), and don't try to pack - just stick it all straight back in the trolley and pack it outside!!0 -
Packs of pure fruit juice 5x250ml (ideal for lunchboxes) for 79p.
Mixed fruit jam (raspberry, blackcurrant, blueberry.. I think) is gorgeous. Just like homemade!
Cold meats are very good quality.
Liquid soap, various types.. most smell lovely.
70% cocoa-solid chocolate is good value."Cheap", "Fast", "Right" -- pick two.0 -
A whole fresh pineapple is 85p. Have a bit of a squeeze before you buy though as in my experience sometimes they are v.soft and therefore way past their best.
If you like noodles they do packs for 15p which I have for lunch...they are the instant variety with a little sachet of flavouring inside. Just add boiling water... 15p for lunch...try beating that!
Crispbread, quite similar to Ryvita original in taste and pack size - 27p.
I have never bought them but someone has raved about their Digestive biscuits, saw them at 20p last time I was in, but think they are usually around 30p.
There have been various reports that their ice cream is positively sinful - again I have never bought it because that would be the beginning of the end for me... I understand it's cheaper than Ben & Jerry's etc.
If you have a cat their cat litter is excellent - a big bag of clumping for £1.89 - bigger and better than Tesco or Asda economy types.
I love their porridge, 27p I think, though it's quite a small pack.
The first time I went I was v.put off by the lack of "ambience" and how the goods are displayed still in their boxes. However once you get over the austere atmosphere it's worth having a good browse and giving things a chance. Things are often as good as or perhaps even better than the brands you're used to.0 -
I have looked at there website. Done a search for local shops. It gives me very nice directions.
But it seems to lack important info like when they are open.
If anyone can point towards that then I know when to go.
I have feeling them are open to 8pm but not a 100% sure.
Thanks in advance.

to find out opening times you will have to ring head office - they dont put their local numbers in the phone book or yellow pages
most are open til 8pm tho
things to buy - sliced meats, pamesan, tinned toms, tinned mackrel, olive oil, cans of bitter, block jelly, chocolate, cottage cheese, sliced granary bread, part-cooked rolls, microwave popcorn, instant capuccino (almond one espec), oj, large bags of crinkle cut crips (beware these are morish) and best of all choco softies (huge marshmallow teacakes, made with plain choc)
and then of course all the household offers they do that change every week
i agree that you cant do a 'full' shop at lidl, but im starting to buy more and more from there, and it is def better quality for what you pay
also the checkouts are a nightmare, you are just under so much pressure to get everything back into the trolley (remember to point your trolley the right way too, else they b011ock you)
other than that, its fabo0 -
Dry cure bacon and the gammon joints are excellent and much cheaper than posh supermarkets.0

a little tip for the trolleys, a 1p will work them,(well it does where I am).
Tinned rice pudding large tin 39p very nice.
All their ice creams

including meat, cheese, veg & fruit, frozen fish, , oil ,eggs flours, sugar, etc etc and only spen £32.00,0 -

Thanks I thought it was 8pm. But they use to have there opening hours on-line. I find if they can put directions they can put opening times up as well.
That is funny about the trolleys where I use to live they banned a woman from the shop because she put her trolley the wrong way around. But she said it was easier for her.
The unbanned her but she said she would never shop there again.
