Any Ideas on how the pin sentry gadgets are going to affect chip and signature card holders like me?

Sounds a bit half baked to me...

  • I also work for Barclays, and the devices have caused more problems than enough, read something though from APACS that apparently the devices as rolled out will be used for Chip and Pin phase two, for internet shopping.
  • I logged my first compaint to Barclays today having banked with them for 14 years without issue. Was issued with a card reader, device works fine but I keep forgetting to carry it everywhere. I work and live in 2 different places during the week/weekends (140 miles apart) so I ring up to request a second machine and am advised I have to pay £6 for the privilege (this also applies if you lose it). Am also informed to make a payment I now need to go into a branch as I don't have a phone banking account.

Having not requested additional security, having never had issues with the existing log on process and having not had concerns about security I find it really frustrating this is forced down your throat without making every effort to make it as convenient as possible. Barclays should be encouraging people to use online facilities, this is a detriment and likely to encourage people down more expensive call centre and branch channels increasing their service overheads. Any additional hardware costs encurred by them in issuing these to customers should surely be covered by their reduced fraud costs / provisions. Whoever wrote the business case to justify this project in the first place must have included provision for replacement devices for customers losing them, if not that was complete madness.

I got this the other day - and it does seem an inordinate amount of faff, just to do my online banking. However - if these devices are also going to be used for internet shopping, then fair enough. Alas I have a number of bank accounts (ergo a number of online banking ids) so no doubt I can expect a whole range of gadgetry!!!

HSBC used these card readers on our business bank account and they stopped working after a windows update!

We now have clever little independent PIN generators that give out numbers once we have registered the device and entered our PIN access number. If we get our PIN wrong 3 times they stop working.

    This works really good

I think they should only use this device if you set up a new bill, etc, not when logging in to check your account.. I log in to my banking several times a week to check my outgoings and incoming, and I'd hate to have to carry the device with me to work, etc.
  • You do NOT need to login with PINsentry if you don't want to!...

This is such a pain if, like me, you access online banking in various locations, not, as Barclays assume, sitting at the same PC each time!

If you call Barclays Online Banking Helpdesk and ask them to allow you to log in without PINsentry they will remove the need for you to do this and everything will look as it did before!

Note, you will need to be put through to the Coventry team for them to do this and they will probably initially tell you that you have to use the PINsentry whether you like it or not. Don't take no for an answer!

Without PINsentry login you will be able to do everything you could do before apart from setting up a new "non-standard" payee.

I've never heard of this. Is it all Barclays online customers?

i have one and its quite clear you don't need one to just log in and view your statements. Its if you want to do stuff its required.

I also have one for a business account and can assure you that you do need to use it every time to logon to the system.
