Barclays Online - PINsentry

HSBC used these card readers on our business bank account and they stopped working after a windows update!
We now have clever little independent PIN generators that give out numbers once we have registered the device and entered our PIN access number. If we get our PIN wrong 3 times they stop working.
This works really good
Hi Netlang - Does the HSBC pin generator require you to carry the card? I am looking to switch away from Barclays after 10 years because of this stupid pin sentry fiasco, and want to find an account that I can be sure will not be introducing pin sentry.0 -
Any Ideas on how the pin sentry gadgets are going to affect chip and signature card holders like me?
Sounds a bit half baked to me...
I've just this minute called Barclays on their 0500 007 234 number, opition 4.
Q. I'm thinking of transferring to Barclays & require a Chip & Signature Card. I don't PIN.
A. Hold on and I'll find out. (About a minute later). You can opt out Chip & PIN. Either apply online and when you get the written applicaiton to sign put a note on it saying you want a Chip & Signatre Card. Or you can apply by phone and ask for a Chip & Signature or better still go into Branch.
Q. Thanks. But how does this work with PIN Sentry as I don't PIN?
A.. You can OPT out of PIN Sentry too. If you've Chip & Signature Cards there will be a note on your file.
PS Hope this helps.0 -
I've just logged, it says:
PINsentry and your payments We’re introducing PINsentry to Online Banking. From 26 November 2007, you’ll need a PINsentry card reader to make payments or set up standing orders in Online Banking to someone new. However, you will not be affected by this change where you’ve previously saved the payee’s details within Online Banking or where you make payments to recognised companies and utility providers. We’re in the process of distributing PINsentry card readers to online users who regularly set up payments to someone new. From 26 November 2007, if you try to make a payment to someone new and don’t have a PINsentry card reader, Online Banking will guide you through the process to upgrade. Your card reader should arrive within 6 days of your request to upgrade.
I don't often set up new payees so I supposed I won't be on the priority list for a card reader. It would be a pain if I've prevented from doing so if I've not upgraded.0 -

My father has a HSBC fob for his business account with them - it doesn't require you to carry a card.
I think HSBC don't plan to introduce key fobs for personal accounts in the UK but they have also ruled out card readers as they don't believe that system is secure..

Hi,
I have just received mine too. Within a couple of hours I rang up Barclays and told them what I thought of it and to remove it from my account or lose me as a customer.
They have agreed to return me to the 'classic' way of logging in.
It is an ill thought out solution. Who wants to carry around a calculator looking thing with them whenever they want to check their balance. It's bad enough trying to remember my wallet, mobile phone and car keys without having to remember this. I am an avid user of online banking and log in 4 -5 times a week from various locations. This thing is just a hindrance.
Why couldn't they design a credit card sized device that fits in your wallet so you don't need to remember it? At least then they can justify it as portable.
As a former user of the pinsentry my only new inconvenience is that whenever I need to setup a new payee I must either use telephone banking or call into a branch. Fine by me ! That's all of about once a year.
The only way I can see this working is that Barclays allow a two way approach to logging on:
A: Logging in without Pinsentry will only give view access and the ability to move funds within own Barclays accounts.
B: Pinsentry login to allow full account access including new payee setup.
or
I can see this being an expensive embarrassment for Barclays.:hello:  :dance:0 -
I just want to add that if you are a Premier banking customer there is no way that they will reverse this and you are forced to use PINsentry
I know as I have just spent ½ hour on the phone to Barclays asking to be removed from this ridiculous method only to be told that as a Premier banking customer it is compulsory and cannot be changed. Not a happy bunny.0 -
Oh dear I don't think people are believing me....
1. Click Login
2. Type in your barclays membership number.
3. Click on "Not got your card reader?"
4. Read this and weep
Don’t worry if you've forgotten your card reader. You can still have access, providing you have a Connect/Electron debit card, by filling in the details below.
Sorry I don't usually rub it in
Ofc, your access is more limited this way but I "assure you" you do get some access :P0 -

I tried it - access is limited to viewing your statement only, the options to make payments are compltely removed!!!
Going to ring 'em on Monday ... this whole situation is nuts.0 -

Yup i guess most the time though thats all most people would need. I only make payments online where my reader is but i can appreciate this would be frustrating for some.0
