This sounds nuts, dont bank with Barclays but use a couple of other banks (smile and halifax, also have accounts with a few other providers) will be an absolute nightmare if they all switch to these readers/pin things as i would imagine that you have to have a different one for each account....also does each user get their own or is it one per house as we have mostly joint accounts but also a couple single ones
  • I travel a lot for business and the great thing for me was the ease of use of Barclays Internet Banking. However, I am not going to drag this device around with me everywhere I go. I will be looking to move my account, which is a shame, as I am now 33 and have been with Barclays since I was a supersaver.

I think this decision will cost them quite a few customers.

I started a post on my blog that attracted a few people to comment on ways they had tried to get round the system.

What we definitely know is that if you get the scheme reveresed to your classic banking, you cannot add new payees to your payments section when banking online.

I have started a small petition on my site, come over and leave comments on what you did and how far you got with it, maybe we can get Barclays to listen!

Having just read the above posts I am pleased that I have just switched my Barclays Account to Alliance & Leicester. Instead of paying £14 per month for the privilege? of banking with them and earning less than 1% interest I now am earning over 6% interest. The staff at A & L are far more helpful as is their call centre.

My card reader arrived yesterday, and although I have skimmed through how it works, but not yet put it into action, am I right in thinking, that whereas I have many bank accounts etc. all registered with Egg Money Manager, Barclays will not work with that system any more? Any one any experience of Barclays new fangled gadget and EMM?
  • Just to put a spin on this, received mine and think it's a great idea!

Its simple. Need to have access to my current account as I travel. Won't carry the stupid little thing with me. Easiest option is to move account.

I've had one a while, and although it's ok when I need it at my desk, we did go abroad and as I wasn't going to risk taking the little machine though air security I couldn't check/operate my bank account whilst I was abroad. I've been checking it daily for 7 years or so, so this is a big change for me. I can see the use of the "unique" type of identifier it comes back with for internet purchases though.

Did make me question the need for so many transactions on my account, and how I can simplify my bank needs. Will probably end up moving account.
  • Been forced to use mine today for the first time. Reader seems to work fine, but when I enter the code on the site it says 'My details are invalid'

Called the helpline number (put through to India) and was informed that there is a 'maintenance marker' on my account and that I will need to go to my branch to have it removed than call back to reset my account!

I don't live or work near my branch, so I am now without online banking until I can take a days holiday to get there.

    Really not happy about this.
  • Stupid and completely un-thought-out idea.. not only that but I keep mentally pronouncing Pinsentry as p*ss-entry!!!
