I have the majority of my accounts registered with Egg Money Manager.
Now that I have got the Pin Sentry gadget, of course it comes on EMM as an error. However, when you click on the Error, it links you through to Barclays and says "Not got your Card Reader" .... You can still access the account online, by doing the following entering Surname, DOB, Connect/Electron 16 digit number, plus security number. Yes I know it's a longer way round, but it would avoid carrying the gadget.

I then went online via Barclays own website, and scrolled down to the first page and it also says on there in orange writing "Not got your Card Reader" and gets you through to the same page as described above.
  • Barclays have really gone over the top now. Having spoken to them a couple of weeks ago about wanting to opt out I agreed to give it a try. I was given a reference number to make opting out easier.
So, tried pinsentry for the first time this morning. What a farce. Took me three/four minutes, three wrong numbers (the machine not me) before I got in. As this is a business account that I access about 15/20 times a day I decided enough was enough so I telephoned Barclays to opt out. WOW - talk about security gone crazy.
Firstly I was put through to Mumbai where I 'failed' the security check and was told to take two forms of ID to my branch (I am in Newcastle - the branch is in Maidstone - 350 miles away!!!). This I refused to do and insisted on being transferred to Coventry where they said they couldn't help as I had failed the security check and didn't have an online code - AH says I but I do have an online code, just no-one thought to ask me for it. Oh sorry says they I will put you onto online banking again - back to Mumbai
Again 7 security questions. Then - "I am sorry Mrs...... but as you have a business account you cannot opt out". This again from Mumbai. I insist on speaking to Coventry again (talk about going round in circles - by now I have been on the telephone 53 minutes). Only 6 more minutes and I'm back to Coventry.
Happy to reverse you out of this system but you cannot use online banking until new five digit passcode is sent out sometime in the next three working days!!! But I use online banking constantly says I. Sorry - no other way.
So, end result, I no longer have access to online banking until I get my new passcode - which I can then change to my old passcode!!!
Total telephone call lasted 58 minutes.
  • I have now spent over 80mins on the phone because of this. If Barclays want their helpdesk based overseas then they had better start setting them targets like answering in under 15mins!!!
  • I've been a perfectly happy Barclays customer for many many years.

A few days ago they sent me a PINsentry. I tried it - it worked for a day or so, but then locked me out. Spent all evening on the phone to their Mumbai call centre before being told that they couldn't fix it and I should call back tomorrow to speak to their Coventry call centre.

So this is their business plan:
    1 Identify happy customer
    2 Send out a PINsentry
3 Lock them out of their account
    4 ??? [1]
    5 [strike]Profit[/strike] Loss

Thanks Barclays for messing me about

  • I only log into barclays a couple of times a month to check direct debits, so this isn't going to be much of a pain for me, but would it not have been possible to sell the pinsentry gadget as a calculator?

it's already the perfect size and shape. Has an LCD display, has the 0-9 numeric keypad already in place...all you have to add is the + - X / = leys and hey presto...a nice little dekstop calculator.

    Just an idea.

They want us to enter our card number every time we log on? How open is that to fraud? OK, I know its encrypted, but nothing is 100% safe, really, and with millions of extra card numbers being sent every day chances are somebody will pick them up and start using them.. Why didnt they just stick to entering your membership number and pin?

It's not your full number. It's just the last four digits, and your pin. The pinsentry device then gives you an 8 digit number, which you enter into the online logon page when prompted.

Back to my idea about designing the device to be a calculator (so that it actually performs a useful function rather than just being a logon device)...any takers? Should I be calling dragons den about this?

I predict that Barclays will get so much adverse publicity about the unstable software installed in the Chinese manufactured Pad, that they will withdraw the system in 30 days from now. Their excuse will be that it proved very unpopular with the majority of their Online Customers and that they have bowed to these requests in light of this.

I started a post on my blog that attracted a few people to comment on ways they had tried to get round the system.

What we definitely know is that if you get the scheme reveresed to your classic banking, you cannot add new payees to your payments section when banking online.

I have started a small petition on my site, come over and leave comments on what you did and how far you got with it, maybe we can get Barclays to listen!
