You MUST NOT enter the box until your exit road or lane is clear.

But who actually does that? There would be chaos.

But it's the people who enter the box (e.g. leaving Danson Lane to turn right onto Welling High Street (or is it Parkview Road? ;)) that cause chaos, by blocking people already on the main road. :)

Valid use of the box would be to enter it so as to wait and turn right ON to Danson Lane.

You would only see them on roundabouts with traffic signals.

Not sure if I've misunderstood you but there are roundabouts here without traffic signals and with yellow boxes on them.

EDIT: the point I was trying to make, perhaps a bit obscurely, is that not all yellow boxes are enforceable.

    erm...most people?

More chaos if (im going to use the ops example because theres street view links - its not to criticise the OP in any way) people drive in when not clear, blocking the junction. someone wants to turn right onto Danson road and cant because someones sat there. end up with queues up and down the A207...

I should probably have been clearer as to what I meant.

The rule says that you "You MUST NOT enter the box until your exit road or lane is clear", but I (and I think most people) in practice do this: "Enter the box if you reasonably believe that your exit will be clear by the time you get there".

The difference being that the official wording implies that you wait for the box and your exit to be clear of all vehicles before proceeding, which is only valid if you are the sole vehicle in your road/lane.

Based on what I see on the roads, a lot of people either don't understand the rules or disregard them. I hardly think that it's exceptional enough to warrant singling out one or two FMs.

    .

If you get it wrong and come to a stop on the yellow grid, you get a ticket. Some junctions make an absolute fortune for local councils.
I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

It seems the OP was actually in the wrong, but may have a way out on a technicality. :)

"Clutching at straws" spring to mind. Even faced with the video evidence that clearly shows him entering the box before the other car made it clear and I'm sorry but anyone could see that it wasn't clear, he's still trying to blame it on anything else but his own poor driving.
