  • What ho, all - been away with a stonking coldy virus then teaching but Hugely Appreciative of all your shared good times!
DundeeDoll - Salvador, I think, was just the first name the lad could come up with for a sloth that wasn't "Sid" from Ice Age. And it is undeniably surreal to see a stuffed toy longer than you being cuddled on the public highway. Apparently the sloth shares his bed, like a really long teddy bear. Am now looking out a lunchbox, MS opportunity seizing for the use of. The V&A as fabulous as it's billed? Right, plans being laid. Dorothy Dunnett Readers Association, roses & a leisurely meal - sounds very good.
BoP - belated Happy Birthday! Right with you on vaccination being the smart call. That said, chicken pox brings on the ability to count something remarkable. So right mamselle from Armentiers' vocals, sung, never hurt anyone.
mhagster - your girl is a cracker & blessed with you for mum - who else would make her a certificate?! Yikes, glasses. Right in the castle courtyard? Wonderful! The very young can look astonishingly serious, can't they? Bless you for Asking about FB photos first. Hurrah new job & growl *third* door damaged
Frith - argle younger son & school (& double argh idiot staff, indeed triple & thence quadruple argh - are they illiterate? hm, Governor...), but hurrah older son's korma! Poker superb for maths skills. Even unexplained hugs are hugs. Smoked mackerel is good stuff. Mildly amused at niece's priorities. Really hoping museum decides it needs you to sit quietly with a cup of tea writing policies and looking at objects.
VJsmum - that supervisor is on borrowed time. Atta gal DS calling in sick herself. Hoping open days with DS lead him back into academe but in a happier place.
Mrs SD - all your cards written & stamped? Awed! Happy belated birthday
plumduff55 - lucky DGS to have your sympathy when he's off school. Knitting & meditation - sound fun. A day with grandchildren - & you make it sound glorious! Naturally OS Pleasures include food!
house elf - the young can surprise us at remembrance, pleasantly. Lost ring returned? Wonderful!
MandM90 - a cs Bodum cafetiere is nature's way of reminding you the fancy coffee machine isn't actually what you need but hurrah Diwali! Farrow & Ball paint names are just so much fun...
Purple kitten - a hygge box sounds wonderful! Dead right to sit firmly on both hands & wallet til Black Friday offers up the best opportunties. "armed with a flask" - can I invite you to Lancs for next Remembrance? We keep getting very cold & not learning hard enough from it. Surely it's time for a new Christmas tradition, and better one you are involved in & approve of?! Sugar soaping the kitchen? Awed!
Hopeless Case - the coiled springer will recover but it's not easy on him or you!
MrsLurcherwalker - wow you found a smashing soul in Mr.Stove, eh?! Mantlepiece, mirror, clock, windup radio - the little comforts are all slotting into place! A dogwalk & greeting isn't really 'complete' without muddy pawprints, is it? (Or are my sisters dogs appallingly behaved?) Arboretum colours - yum! IKEA family coffee is good stuff.
LaineyT - to be caught at horse crossing by an impressive string of racehorses - bliss! Once soaked, something for medicinal purposes is really only sensible. That nappy rash cream really is the business (one caving chap I knew coaxed a sample from a midwife just so he could carry a small tub into caves - persuasive lad!)
Olliebeak1951 - anyone who thinks sewing is simple really hasn't thought it through. Humans are not orderly shapes! (Says she who can make a bedspread but struggles with a skirt.) Glad DGD1 is learning to appreciate the finer things!
    Flo61 - a nice dentist is a huge pleasure.
fuddle - homemade Bolognese, with or without red wine, is a serious pleasure! "crochet mermaid tail blanket" is a Lot of gift - I hope the recipient appreciates it properly!
Williamsnana - things are going well when the young Hoover!
Suffolksue - the right kit is such a joy, be it a new washing machine or ballet gear.
Moneywhizz - to recover misplaced health is a definite pleasure.

OS Pleasures recently as in the last fortnight (I really struggle with this daily idea!)
Chatting about fiction in the Vorkosigan universe, I loved the dry observation that "as an accountant I don't do handwavium" but for a good yarn all bets are off.

Intrepid mountain biker has sloped off leaving domestic chores untouched & the tyre levers. If he gets a flat tyre today, he'll be on thin ice for sympathy!

"Eeeh 41 pattern mugs" - you just can't sit and enjoy a war film with some people!

There is something heroically stupid about stumbling into work with a streaming cold but the boss has been making such a deal of the Worthy attending...

Heard "have a seizure", thought "airway!" Then realised colleague discussing airport activity.
    And breathe!

Working from home to keep germy cough & cold away from colleagues, but youngest has brought me pea & ham soup - I feel better & cosseted within spoonsful! [Virus now largely fought off but still sporadic coughs & sneezes.]

Trying not to chuckle as son struggles to switch off Voice control on his phone. "Turn Off!" didn't quite produce the intended effect...

    "Does that bag need refrigerating?"
(Holds up sherbet lemons) "I don't think so!" That said, potentially a shrewd place to hide them...

Trying not to laugh as colleagues complain of having to redecorate as the result of some "bargain purchase". On my salary, the bargain fits in with our shabby chic or it isn't a bargain.

    Colleague said thank you!

Chuckling with a Greggs delivery driver as he steers a terrifying laden rack on castors "wish me luck!" & how, it's a sloping path & I see no brakes. [Everyone survived]

"It'd be boring if we were all the same" - a fascinating thought that helps me appreciate the variations around us as well as chortling over the similarities.

"We'll never tell them" - some soldiers song - aye lads, keep singing while you can, & in remembrance. Bless you & thank you.

Gurgling at "extra haltbare strumpfhose" (German labelled tights in a charity shop) - somehow German sounds So Judgemental!

HIGNFY, on the human seal who swum round Britain & whose tongue (in part) fell out. Seems he ate a lot of banana too. (These ultra-fit types, really, no sense of proportion.)

"That would explain some of your irask" <interrupts> "girlish charm, yes".

Why the menfolk decided to play hunt the right height chair (& kill the swivel one in the process) as I am trying to Iron for Remembrance is just one of those little mysteries.

Remembered, with scouts & service folk past & present & Fire & Ambulance & Police & cadets who can march & a brass band & some folks in robes & sashes. All excellent practice in layering. Not least as one t shirt Not Enough - colleague had 3 layers under uniform shirt.

Several hot cups of tea later, my toes are restored to the circulatory system.

Son has washed red tartan duvet set & fitted sheet now sports disturbing splodges of red. He has asked where the vanish is & listened when told, so I shall indulge in hope.

Excellent work day - field-stripped machine of data in minutes before colleagues very eyes - the 'wow!' was dashed gratifying.

Colleague (& wife & young daughters) has a new puppy, a "Cavapoo"(?), glorious blonde fluff ball called Pippa, with surprisingly good pup manners & absolutely enchanting by phonesnap!

Coffee cup spotted with Bueno Feste - 'happy holidays', seemingly.

Lugging training tackle into office past workmen in every shade of hi vis - not just yellow & orange but pink and green.

School's out - the classroom has been stripped back to desks & chairs & I can now start my weekend! It isn't just the children who are longing for this exercise to be over...

Right. I shall slump back into my usual weekend scruffs & general bad ways but wish you all courage, strength, health & sheer fortitude for when the pleasures do not announce themselves.

    Pleasures for today (Friday).

    1) Not a bad sleep.

    2) Chickened out of school meeting so I've that joy to look forward to next week. I don't know why I'm bothering as I'm always too anxious to remember what I wanted to say and they only spin the same old stuff anyway.

    3) A busy day! Bigger son and I took our garden shed down, took it to the allotment, reassembled it, then went to brother in law's to cut his old (and our new) shed down to the right size. It looks easy written down but that lot took us 7 hours!

    4) Hens well and their new bedding arrived today so the sleeping quarters had a much needed clean out. If it gets to -12 (or just very cold) this winter, they can go in the shed now!

    5) Made chicken nuggets for tea with baked beans, and chips from the van.

    6) Bigger son is now Spiderman at his fancy dress party.

    7) I've watched Gogglebox and Last Leg.

    8) Leonids from today but it is a bit cold to sit out and watch them. If the neighbours are up, the light from their houses is distracting so we go behind the village hall but then means lugging the deckchairs
across the road! Perhaps we'll do it tomorrow night.

    9) Smaller son remembered to bring his unused ingredients back from school so we shall have kedgeree tomorrow and use the salmon on Sunday.

    Good Morning Folks,

    Yesterday

Woken by phone call from DD before 5am as she was having frustrations at the Passport office in India. Then again at 7am, very upset as she had been in a car crash on the way back from the office. She was ok.

    1. Left home late, and made myself even later, by stopping off to pick up a few small grape crates from a couple of veg shops. We are making them into Christmas Eve boxes. (We need about 10 more ). Happy to find 4.

    2. Gentle day in DT classroom. Making plaster of Paris elf doors.

    3. Tea at Ed's Diner with 40% off.

    4. Given comps to see Boy George at The Arena. What a showman! Relived our youth......The support was The Thompson Twins which we both saw in 1983, but different theatres :rotfl: (DH at Hammersmith Odeon and me at The Liverpool Empire), and Belinda Carlisle. (I had a little snooze when she was on :o).

    5. Home and bed before midnight.

    Have a lovely day :)
  • 1) Rugby last night was WOW!!! an amazing game with two of the best tries I've ever seen scored by the same lad, such footwork and speed I'm so glad we were there, the crowd feel was totally fantastic.

    2) Going to watch the local rugby club play this afternoon for the first time and according local magazine they play at the Stad du Rec!

    3) Finally got the timetable and schedule for the weekend before Christmas when all the family are here so now I can actually plan food, activities etc. and start cooking for the freezer.

    4) A day today where the only planned thing is this afternoons rugby and I can sort the house top to bottom before we go. I like td day like that where there is actually 'time' to do things properly.

    5) Getting sorted with most Christmas presents for the family, the older two boys have bean bag chairs as their big present arrived yesterday, little Oreo has an Ikea play kitchen for both Christmas and his Birthday and the Zebra is getting a new cabin bed so Oreo can have his toddler bed in the fullness of time, good to be this far ahead this early.

    Welcome to Sue & Moneywhizz,

    Friday pleasures,

Seasons of mists etc, didn’t see the sun all day but secretly quite enjoyed.

Two purchases, a SH copy of Mr Slater’s Kitchen Diaries arrived, enjoyable time reading up on Autumn and then my first Eb*y purchase :j a much admired but eye wateringly expensive brand of dungarees came up at a not to be missed low price, bid and won. Am hoping won’t look too silly at my age but oh the joy.

Decided to stay at home for the day, little dog still not 100% so would appreciate company and princess pony would appreciate a day off so I pottered with chores instead of charging around.

An old B&W film kind of afternoon.

Pumpkin Gnocchi and meatball bake made eldest DSS murmur in appreciation, what are these holding a gnocchi aloft, at least having him to stay in raising his culinary experience.
  • Had a bit of a 'madcap week' and seem to have lost track of a couple of days ................ as you do ;).

Welcome to all our new posters - it's good to meet you all :j! I've not been here for very long either - but it's always good to look for 'the positives in life' and to appreciate those that other people have in theirs :T.

Some 'dubious' pleasures from yesterday -

    1. Reasonable night's sleep and didn't get up until 7.30/

    2. Breakfast of coffee / Fibre Flakes / GF Toast with marmalade .

    3. Quick visit to Lidl to buy some nappies for a young woman who sells Big Issue in our local town centre and bumped into lovely friend from church. We chatted about our 'BP problems' and she told me that hers has come down quite a bit after swapping to Decaffe Coffee.

    4. Over to GP for Flu Jab (:j) and BP Check (:() ......................... need to go back again in 4wks over the BP. Made a mental note to follow my lovely friend's example and cut out the Caffeine. I've got some really good quality Decaffe Coffee that I buy online so will be using it consistently and NOT revert to the ordinary stuff.

    5. Quick visit to A$DA for a small whoopsie hunt - 4 tins Tuna £2.50 (from £5.00), large savoy cabbage (33p), courgettes 75p, celery 40p, pears 75p, GF Artisan Bread £1.70 (from £3.40)

    6. Back home to Jacket Potatoes with Tuna, red onion, red pepper, mayo for OH and Coleslaw with Spread Cheese for me.
  • Thank you everyone for the warm welcome.

    1. Had a bit of a lazy day due to still recovering and not fully back to normal energy level.

    2. Made a big pot of home made lentil soup at lunch time that we enjoyed for lunch. Lots in fridge for the next few days and some portions frozen.

    3. A quick visit to the swing park with OH, DD and DGS. It was another lovely day but definitely on the chilly side.

    4. Following the swing park visit, we went to a local cafe for warm scones with butter and Jam. Very nice.

    5. Looking forward to an evening in ready to start Series 4 of Line of Duty.

Getting into the swing of this thread. Its good to focus on the simple things that give us pleasure, but we rarely notice. Thanks all.
  • Saturday pleasures

Dry, bright & sunny day - even quite warm :D

Misread the flyer & the address for what I thought was a Christmas Fair :o Ended up walking quite a way, finally found the building & it was a Craft Fair - nothing to do with Christmas :o However, some beautiful items although quite pricey  but a new experience for me & did buy five handmade, individually designed cards for £10 - about the same price as MrA & had a nice chat with the craft lady + I got some exercise :T

Small sm shop - way to crowded for me so no Saturday shopping in future - but I didn’t have to queue to pay :T

Lots of hugs & kisses from a clean-shaven DH :D

DH identified the water birds from the dock - Greylag Geese :D

    Found a penny :rotfl:

Received the re-issued August Premium Bond win cheque :T

Arranged a lunch date with another former work colleague who became a friend :D

Sausage casserole & boiled rice for dinner - yummilicious

    Reading everyone else’s pleasures :D

  • Here's my five for today ;

    1) Washing from yesterday was hung back out this morning - good breeze today.

    2) Caught the bus at 9.15 to a nearby large town. Journey took one hour and I enjoyed reading my book on the way.

    3) I spent over half an hour in this beautiful quilting shop trying to decide on Christmas fabric. I ended up buying just 2 fat quarters - I could have bought a lot more but must save money for my short break away next month.

    4) A very lazy afternoon watching Road to Terabithia and crying at the end 😢. Another dvd I was testing to give to dgs for Christmas.

    5) I had Pollock, chips and cauliflower, then hot peach souffl! pudding for dinner. First time I've tried Pollock and it was very nice. I always remember Frugal Queen recommending it.

I started with a cold last night and began using Vicks First Defence. First time I've used this - time will tell if it works xx
