villagelife - welsh rarebit with stilton sounds amazing! Hand up here for epilepsy - late onset it is one of the very best disabilities to have, as once the pills get sorted (so much easier when patient Not Growing), it's pretty much carry on as normal. (Getting there does take some ruined hair-dos, though.) Well done Dad not driving in the dark - excellent call!

bala - greyhounds are laid back, eh? There is a pup somewhere in our future but apparently we're looking for a Heinz. De-hoarding is on my really need to crack on with list.

VJsmum - amidst all the marking, you strike gold? May that help with the rest you have to go through! How much food - there's not enough else to distract you? I'd heard mud baths were Good For You but I think they're hard on the laundry & lush is more fun.

DundeeDoll - so glad to hear Bilbo recovering, love the computer controlled drones (the first footing reference!) & just struck all of a heap by MrPiano.

Cranky - one of the strange things of this strange year is the cross-examination of even a cold, but once the HT is feeling better, start planning that foray around Edinburgh & Glasgow!?

BoP if you can wrap Ampersand in cottonwool, you must also be using gaffer tape & several excellent aromatics. How do you have three bathrooms amongst the two of you?! Marmite on crumpets - that's the stuff! Then connected to the docks - well this working from home knocks seven bells out of the commute as was.

Happycas - custard & Agatha Christie - absolutely the right mix for this cold weather! Beat the bland with a pack of fat quarters of bright colours? Inspiration can creep up on you.

Ampersand - I must be more adventurous in my jam labelling. Fortified Mutant yegads - the lads would be forming a hopeful queue - marmelade much more fun than a spider bite. Ferocious rolling boil! "book, snug, warm, R4x" - hear hear!

Frith - we humans grumble at covid restrictions but for chickens its all the enclosure no explanation (mind, no politicians - hm, may need to gnaw on that idea further.)

mhagster - the whole back to work is almost reassuring, isn't it?! This wil be my first September with noone in school which will feel remarkably strange. Assorted family members await a photo of a snow angel - I have explained that I am unwilling to both fall over & get blinking cold, just for their delectation, but I go for chaperoned walks with a phone-camera-ready son. Love the idea of sibling vultures picking over some to go !

LaineyT - much smitten with a rabbit strategically positioned for the first rays of the rising sun.

Nargleblast - snow is very pretty so long as it melts away before you have to take a car out. Love the culinary plans!

OS Pleasures recently

Just feeling you all upholding me & my lot through some very lumpy moments. If mostly sane & lucid, this is largely thanks to you!

Well, since there weren’t stockings, there were balloons still in the stash - admittedly 21st birthday ones [bought & stashed in anticipation, Ah Well] but a balloon is a balloon where a Pringles-tube-smoke-cannon is concerned. Himself was tidying the match & lighter collection & spotted the smoke matches [used to check chimney draw] ageing... (some people say use an incense cone but we didn’t have any.) Middleson (just back in) was all hopeful it was Pringles to eat! [I gave him 3 seconds of disappointment, before revealing the Other Tube.]

Cobblers - we do not have the stash of max & lemonade I thought but where! Found a squirrelling of biscuits of various sorts, though.

Courier packages have arrived & recipients cheeping pleased surprise.

Eyeing huge bowl of onion rings “this is where we see the limits” “I know my limits” “Yeah?” “Well, I’ve met them” [if it all ends in tears, it’s the season of overdoing it on food.] [No tears. No leftovers. Ye Gods the male digestive system.]

My mother unpacking a couriered box “ooh, Eccles cakes” “well, mince pies are about to go out of season....”

Found a disposable lighter needed to power a small blowtorch (as you do, in the Dig family) & so am in extended eBay conversation with some lighter geek/dealer as to the Right Sort of lighter to power it... [Awed, bemused, charmed at the generous geek who has sought so hard to find the Right Thing, and promised me a smashing bulk deal when we find the right size & shaped one!] [They arrived & both are wrong for the device but splndid sources of flame.]

Eyeing the pile of emptied boxes of assorted edibles & we’re regretting nothing (although the lads have a bit to learn about disposing of the evidence!) The bin men may have views & I think a tip run is in my near futire.

Langoustine pate is my new festive treat. It’s delicious, and I got a cute little pot as well... (I led myself astray, shopping.)

Cries of outrage as son drops copooked rack of ribs into sink. All this “holding in place with a knife” requires stabbing the meat firmly, apparently. Since I dropped my mushrooms on toast barely half an hour earlier, I may not laugh, but Himself is “surrounded by idiots!”

Snow is really lovely so long as you’re warm, dry, indoors & no one you love has to go out into it. The lad’s tree looks particularly stunning, lines of light. Somehow that’s really comforting.

If you’ve never seen Nina Conti with Monkey, you’ve missed a treat. Nina at the gynaecologist was eye-wateringly funny.

BoP’s post reminds me, life is more fun with a good murder, so shall look out a Father Brown or similar. Skool duggery galore & alibis optional! [Replete grin.]

Sorted the thankyou letter address list. Bentwood chair, whip & pistol all nearby but last year they were very good about not letting it drag on into the New Year. So I’d better un-cap the fountain pen & do mine. [Find the blinking notelets first, Ahem.]

Bruce Dickenson, Sarajevo. Yes, Christmas in Britain after must have seemed amazingly strange but then to return decades later to those who were there (or weren’t) as a near-demi-god. For the survivors, still - his visit is seen as a major turning point.

I’m a fan of Bill Gibson’s SF. His “Peripheral” took several run ups, which is a bit of a surprise from a familiar author, but having finished it, read his afterword & had a bit of a think, I will be intrigued to see what he does next.

Laughing at Engineer in a snit as we went shopping (he doesn’t know what day it is) & he Insists we’re shopping tomorrow. No siree! Done today (in the relative quiet) so we can take Himself to the medics tomorrow. [Snow, ice, fog & the idiot who left her satnav in the house, so the familiar trip included some eh? moments but those kept Himself’s mind off the medics as he claimed to see signage for the SNP and later in Cyrillic. Safely delivered, despite.]

Ah YouTube & man and mule. A research historian & reenactor with equine talents, chap imported a Spanish mule & it’s riveting viewing as he & mule figure each other out. He seems competent but the mule (& oh those ears!) is learning brilliantly.

A military dealer has sent a spring flyer round - a deactivated Bren barrel now costs as much as the deactivated (old spec) Bren did when I got it to distract Himself from his broken leg. (The Dig household has its own ways of dealing with boredom, but I didn’t quite think that through, excellent call though it turned out to be.)

“Tamagotchi - a keyring that makes demands” - quite enjoying the rundown of toys over decades. Crooning over Playmobil & Lego, still bewildered by ‘cabbage patch kids’.

Father Brown & ‘cacoethes‘ - the irresistible  urge to do something unexpected/irrational. Like some of my plans until I have that alibi nailed.

Aw, family ensconced watching Hot Fuzz, each with a Cornetto of course. It’d be rude not to. (Er, Hot Fuzz part of the ‘Cornetto trilogy’ a Wight Pegg & Frost trilogy - the sort of film you can both enjoy with a case of something, and enjoy spotting little geek details for the 11th time.)

Grabbed youngest (required before I leave the house) to go for a stroll. Admired neighbours' variegated holly with berries, gawked are the vehicle tracks left by something dashed big, observed son reverse into my car (fairly gently, harrumph) as he parked & we all pattered back in. Minutes later, the 2 flake snow erratically forecast is dumping down like someone shaking a feather duvet!

Things we do for love. I have bought my beloved an ultralight hand trowel for making like a bear in the woods with...

Son offering a pudding to his dad who doesn’t want to take the last pudding from his son “it’s OK dad, I had the other 3” - amidst happy guffaws, 

Aw, son foraging (in various locations) for “contingency biscuits”....

My to do list includes tree, tip, biscuits, possibly a major shop before the gubbyment pipes up again (but we can survive til Thursday & they can't lock us in our houses) & ahem the thankyou letters. As soon as I place an irrevocable order for notelets the original stash (£20 worth from the Works) will reappear... Ah well, health strength love & courage to all as have need, plus HWBs, & Onwards!

1 I wandered around the front and back garden and made a plan, but didn’t do any er work, I did find a rather large dug ferret hole that meant I have to shut the garden off to the animals as I will need to fill it in tomorrow.

2 All the food that was left out for the foxes was gone.

3 We made a good start on what was a big box of choc, and now feel like I’ve eaten too much.

4 Enjoying the last night of sparkly tree.

Good afternoon all, pleasures for yesterday....

A lie in. The start of a fairly lazy Sunday.

The HT feeling much better. Not roast dinner ready but better, so we had pasta instead. Vey quick and easy to make. 

The ironing mountain all done and put away. I quite like ironing but I like finishing it even more. 

Lovely hot bath then clean pjs.

Online gaming with best friend - it's good to talk.

My pleasures:
- Woke up to a clean kitchen
- Back to work today, nice to be dressed by 8am rather than festering in my fetid dressing gown. Sometimes there is such thing as enough Christmas!
- Updated YNAB (the budget) - all looking in order, for the first time in a long time
- Prepped dinner for tonight, last night, so just need to chuck in pineapple and green beans ('tis a Thai curry) and off we go.
- Looking at photos of my fat 10 month old on the online nursery portal. He is just the light of my life.

Hello. Workety work done! One down. One to go. We were busy today and tips were okay ( bit meh but better than nothing! ) clink clunk in the almost empty jam jars.
Up earlier than the alarm clock. Nice doggy walk as far as the postbox and back. Much sniffing to be done. Was still all sparkly and snowy but more crunchy underfoot than iced which made it easier to walk on. 

Walked to work ( which means I have to walk home...) a beautiful morning. A beautiful sky. The rooks leaving their roost noisily as I open up. Hundreds of them fly overhead.

Busy day which I wasn’t expecting. Company good and there was a box of quality streets still😄 straight into the toffees! 

Walk home and it was still light, had to pop up to boss to drop stuff off. Then home to my doggy. Met a chocolate lab on the way home who was rather nice. As was his owner so had a quick I’ve never spoken to you before chat! 

Lovely welcome home from my doggy ( hmmm ....it means it’s teatime doesn’t it?) 

so we are back in tighter lockdown again. Till end of month. Think work is staying open meantime. It’s all a bit vague. So I’m in tomorrow at least. Just as well as I’d got lots of prep done! 

Right it’s hot shower and jammies time then something beginning with pasta of some description for tea.

I have a hot cuppa to read D4Vs post.

1 Doctors phone appointment, a pleasure to get one, it leads to x rays and a physio apt for confirmation of our thoughts.

2 The decorations are down, however we have decided to leave the multi coloured rope light woven around the stair balustrades as it is, as it makes a nice light.

3 I can already spot that where I was hoping to make savings in the food budget won’t work, but I will keep at it and see, rather than ordering less often is looks like we order more but less often so it evens out.

4 I used up some l/o mini sausages and bacon to make up little grilled brekkies this morning. Using a voucher to order in from a local independent tonight as I still need to meal plan for the week ahead.

5 I’ve applied for a whole host of roles with renewed ompth. As I start working towards something else.

Just back (couple of hours) from Royal Marsden with SIL.  Results in about 3 weeks.

Left at 9am.  Had cooked Tiggy one of her favourite meals.  Came back around 4pm and she had not eaten her food or accepted a treat.  Wolfed it down as soon as she realised I was staying in.  Had to stand in kitchen with her.

I love this dog but do worry about her.

I lerv sprouts bop but hate coriander leaves. both apparently are genetic
1) my last day of holiday and I practised the art of laziness starting with a delicious lie-in
2) then reading in the bath (though did do 90 minutes of unofficial workety work so i don't get quite so hit by emails tomorrow)
3) then then hm spicy winter soup followed by christmas pudding cheese on crackers
4) then a long walk with the dogs - phoned dad which meant by the time i got home my hands were freezing
5) after the news we'd all been expecting went down to the postoffice to post a January hygge box to my dd1 in the Netherlands. A custom form was duly filled in. and bought a caterpillar cake on the way home to cheer us all up. but we are now all too full with yummy ham and mash - comfort food is much needed in these times of m'eh.

Pleasures for today (Monday)

1) a lie in

2) smaller son and I had a jolly day out, in search of a new tyre for my car. Turns out the wheel was damaged (I like to think by its previous owner as I’ve no idea how I could have damaged the driver’s side wheel!) Looking at a few on EBay now.

3) hens got out and I couldn’t operate the greenhouse sliding door and catch all 4 of them so they had to stop out for an hour until it got dark and they put themselves to bed. 

4) A very tasty tea of cauli cheese but topped with Stilton, to use it up. Though when you’re on the BSD, everything is tasty...

5) actually agree with the PM this evening, which is a first. Pity the schools went back for one day, for maximum spreading. Smaller son had a day off for teacher training anyway. His school will open (as all students have an EHCP) but he is saying he won’t go. Phone calls will be made tomorrow. 

6) watched 24 Hours in Police Custody, which is always excellent. Set in the Fens, Lainey and Ampersand. 

7) phoned my parents in case they needed lock down things and they were very cheerful indeed! I think it’s the relief of having the vaccination.

1. Bus on time. Managed to read my book.
2. Started my flexible working so longer days in Mondays and Tuesdays and every third Monday off. Day wasn't too bad. Extra I had to work was ok.
3. Chat with DS1 on phone. He was chatty.
4. Leftovers for tea.
5. Clean sheets in the bed.
