I been on the O2 standard 8mb broadband (can't get the faster service here) since Oct 24 and my speeds are erratic even taking into account the 10 day training period. As it gets later in the evening, this also affects opening some websites, i.e google.
In the afternoons I can get between 6 - 7 mb speeds, later it drops to between 2 - 3mb, I guess that this is a contention issue ? My pings also aren't as good as they were with Zen. I think I'll be switching back and paying the extra.
If you can't get faster than 8Mb, you are not really on the O2 product, as your exchange has not been LLU'ed with O2 equipment. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -
1: Have you tried using Opendns this will resolve the problem with the websites loading?
Do you mean this which I just googled? It's not quite clear it's purpose or how it works ..

A DNS server just converts the URL to an IP address. You don't have to use the DNS servers maintained by your ISP - you can use a generic one like OpenDNS.
I followed the instructions here:

1: Have you tried using Opendns this will resolve the problem with the websites loading?
2: Have you tried removing the Bell/Wire or using the BT iplate (or whatever its called). When I removed my bellwire my speed went up instantly by 1.5Mb and whereas I previously saw a degradation in speed (the longer my modem was on, eg: turning it off/on resolved it) it has now been rock solid at a constant speed.
Opendns is a new one on me.
Re the bell wire, I've heard of this but don't really think it'll be of much benefit as my internet was working just great with Zen prior to O2 (was fine for 4 years). My router is placed about 1 meter away from the main phone socket. If you can't get faster than 8Mb, you are not really on the O2 product, as your exchange has not been LLU'ed with O2 equipment.0 -

I was plugging directly into the Master Socket within a metre and removing the bell wire improved my speed by 1.5Mb. I was amazed.
The problem on Tuesday was an issue that Be/o2 had with DNS - to counter this I merely changed to Opendns - see post above,Waddle you do eh?0 -
Thanks, I'll look into it.0

someone emailed o2 over on digital spy and got this reply from them about the problems some folks have had on tues and thursday, i had probs too on both these nights.
Thank you for contacting us about your connection issues.
I'm afraid that on Tuesday and Thursday evening this week we had problems with our DNS servers. As these servers control the way web pages are accessed this may have shown as either a slow connection or restricted your access to some of your favourite websites.
As soon as we are aware of any server issues we work hard to try and resolve these as quickly as possible. In both of these recent incidents the issue was resolved in the early hours of the following morning.
If you are still having problems accessing any websites then please go through a reset on the router by switching it off and on again, as this should then resolve this issue for you.
I hope this interuption to you service has not caused too much inconvenience.

Hello
I ordered 02 Broadband today.
My situation is slightly confusing.
I used my daughter's 02 pay as you go number to get the discount.
My billing address is my home address.
But the broadband is being set up for my Mothers' address.
So I am going to be paying the broadband fee, while my Mother continues to pay her BT Line as normal. Is that correct? Will my Mum's BT bill be affected for any reason or will it remain the same? Since the 02 bill will be coming out of my bank account via direct debit?
Sorry it's just a little daunting signing up to all these contracts, hehe!:money:0 -
BT and o2 are separate companies. The line rental is nothing to do with o2, and the o2 broadband won't affect the bt bill.0

Wow. Just changed to Open DNS and the O2 broadband speed which has slowed down considerably in the last week has gone from snail slow to lightning fast. Mighty impressed. Thanks folks.0
