I'm thinking of joining o2 broadband, I'm currently with virgin media but since the 10meg 'upgrade' I've had more down time than up, and when it is on, sites take an age to load.

My question being, how do I know what speeds I can expect? I've had cable broadband for as long as I can remember so distance from the exchange has never been an issue.

I'm thinking of getting the 20meg package but if I won't actually get the 20meg, I may as well pay less and get a slower package.

If you put your number into the o2 website (go via quidco.com site to get the referral £60 opportunity) it will ONLY offer you the speed/package(s) it EXPECTS your line can support (based on a BT database, which can be mistaken). If you sign up to the "wrong" package they let you upgrade/downgrade freely - indeed they recommend it to you if your actual line doesnt support what you'd signed for.

That issue and lots of others covered in my o2 (and Bethere) features document at

Thank you. Just checked, apparently the premium service is recommended. Now I just need to decide if I should ditch VM now, or give them a week to get it sorted.

If you are on o2 ACCESS then you do need an ID/password, but if you are on any of the other 3 "LLU" packages there is NO ID/password.

For your ACCESS password you would need to speak to o2 Support on their 0800 number (be clear you are after your o2 ACCESS id/password and don't get confused about any www.o2.com ID/password) although you can potentially find it out for yourself from your o2 box.

I was thinking of migrating to o2 soon and even placed the line transfer to BT... But I see a lot of connection and speed issues on their forums, which kind of worries me. I have been with Bulldog for a very long time and the connection has been very stable so far. Am I making a mistake here by switching to o2?

I am looking to get o2 broadband and take advantage of their £7.50/month offer as an o2 pay monthly customer.

However, my contract ends next month, can I still take advantage of the offer now or must I sign up for another 12mth?

if so, I'll get the Tiscali package instead

o2 give mobile subscribers, either contract or PAYG, their £5/m broadband discount EACH MONTH if they meet the discount requirements that month.

So if you had say an o2 mobile monthly contract that ran out during your first year of o2 broadband, then the monthly o2 bb bill would go up £5 to £12.50/m once your mobile contract expired.

However with an o2 PAYG you need only top up £10/qtr (see the terms on the o2 website re 3 months to 3 days before your monthly BB billing date) to obtain that £5/m discount - ie 4 x £10 over 1yr to get 12 x £5 discount.
