We just had a similar issue when 8 of us flew to Malta to celebrate a birthday
we were allocated 8 seats in 8 rows spanning across the length of the plane .
All rows allocated had seats spare so there was plenty of opportunity for us to at least sit in pairs
we ended up spending £6 each person each way so that we could sit together.
This cost us in total a further £96 on top of our original flight prices , so in actual fact our cheap flights became pretty expensive.
Unfortunately we have booked , prior to finding out about this ridiculous seating policy, some more flights with Ryanair for later this year, so am guessing we'll be stung for more seat charges then .
Needless to say we will not be using this rip off airline again.

Surely only 4 would need to pay to sit next to their friend.............and for that reason I don't believe it.

My experience on one flight was, initially self and OH were placed at opposite end of the plane. When I moved myself to be next to the random one they'd allocated her. her previous allocation disappeared, making me have to book her place next to mine. So 2 bookings cost £9 one way.

But the annoyance really is the faff involved and I only found out about all this a couple of days before flying at the boarding pass printing stage and not before.

Ryanair had a good spell but has now gone back to it's bad old ways with a vengeance!

The easiest method (as I see it) is to mimic cinema seat bookings.
You pick you're seats (as opposed to just ticking a box which says "seat us all together"). Cinemas always seem to reasonably full so why would any difference apply to planes?

You can pick your seats with Ryanair.

There's a charge involved with this, not sure if the same is true of cinema seats.

There's no explicit charge so I assume this is built in to the cost of the ticket.

Now, Ryanair will deliberately sit people at opposite ends of the plane, and then cheekily still offer them the chance to change for a cost. It's this that people are finding leaves a bad taste.

I think passengers should be more enterprising. Everyone should refuse to pay for an allocated seat, then before take-off, everyone could have a free-for-all auction to sell their seat to the highest bidder. Or just find someone to swap with.

It'd be a bit of a scramble, and delay take off for a bit, but passengers aren't made of money, so RyanAir would just have to accept that that's how it works.

Just like they're expecting passengers to accept the fee not to be deliberately split up.

If the airline aren't happy about the amount of money they'll be charged for delaying take-off, then they should have seated people more appropriately. You can't really blame the passengers if RyanAir delays take off by splitting everyone up, and forcing them to sort out their own seating positions with other passengers.

A previous post said they received an email from ryanair saying that as you have been seated apart would you like to book the adjoining seat.........not book two new seats together.................

You do realize many people don't care about the seat fee and just incorporate into the total cost of their trip? If some cheapskates can't bear to part with £3 for a seat and can't handle sitting on their own for a couple of hours then they should fly another airline rather than inconveniencing other passengers.

But I (and I know other posters feel the same) don't want the price of choosing my seat built into the cost of the ticket.
I thought that was the whole point in unbundling all those things you used to get such as meals, hold luggage etc.
Travellers are able to choose what they want to pay for and if being sat apart from a travelling companion isn't a 'must have' (as it's not for me), then you don't pay.

But be grown-up and accept that not paying may result in not being sat with the other people you're traveling with.
