This isn't about the fact it was a hen party. And it isn't about the fact that it was 15 people (just happens that's how many was in this group).

This new policy is petty. We know that Ryanair charge to pay to reserve seats, as do most airlines. But now deliberately splitting people up who haven't paid is a very cynical method of driving extra revenue.

It's causing more issues in the cabin before takeoff as people try to swap seats. And as s others do, I wonder if this will have an impact in an evacuation.

It also flies in the face of everything Ryanair have done in the last couple of years under their "Always getting better" drive.

This policy is creating annoyed and anxious passengers in the cabin.

Ryanair is getting extremely large with more aircraft in service and on order than ever before, by getting bigger the likelihood of an evacuation on the ground affecting an aircraft increases and this policy would slow down an evacuation with additional consequences.

Ryanair can't afford for this to happen.
How on earth would it slow down evacuation?

What do people do in an emergency when separated?

    Get off the plane!

You'd need to pretty idiotic to do anything else, as bad as those people that think they can stop to get their belongings.

I think it was a good idea, i'd pay extra to be seated as far away as possible from a group of 15 people on a hen party. Unless the hen party was in Australia i can't see what the issue was ? Surely they could spend a couple of hours apart from their mates ?

People don't do what you'd expect. It's very easy to say in an emergency you get up and leave exactly how your were briefed to do so. But evidence from countless evacuations shows this quite often doesn't happen.

People's first instincts may well be to find their loves ones/travelling companions etc. You may say that's stupid but when placed in those situations the human becomes very unpredictable and it's not their fault.

We need some maths analysis to accompany the article - just what are the odds that a "random" allocation gives all middle seats and all separate rows?

It's a probably always a "random allocation apart" for groups that do not pay to be together, would undermine the charge otherwise.

Clearly they should have booked separately, then they'd have more chance of sitting near each other.

I don't have a problem with it. It is better than charging everyone for an allocated seat, whether they want it or not like other airlines. I travel alone a fair bit and I'd prefer to save a few quid for not having allocated seat, a few more quid for doing without a small pack of nuts, a few more for not checking in baggage, a few more still for printing my own boarding pass.

Probably higher than you think, depending on how many people have paid to reserve the more popular aisle and window seats. Then, as already mentioned, there is the trick of couples reserving the window and aisle seat to try to block out the middle seat for more room for themselves (whereas if they take window and middle, someone else will take the aisle).
