Go to court and tell them that you were just trying to push in and that you're really clever.
Then let us know how you got on. :D

    Hi

A question re RED X's on motorways.

When the RED X lights up, and you are not able to jum/move safely into another lane, how long before the RED X becomes active? IE, you are driving along legally as you approach the gantry the RED X appears and you have no chance to safely change langes, is there a 30 second/etc grace period?

    Thanks again!

They don't suddenly appear without warning. At least two preceding sets of gantries or single matrix signs on the carriageway (and merging slip roads if they are within the vicinity of the overall signal set) will show 50s followed by lane diversion arrows (lane closures on single matrix signs) prior to the signs intended to show a red X. The sign that will show a red X illuminates firstly as a 50, then gradually counts down as 40, 30, 20 and then finally shows the X.

If you are acting on the preceding warning signs you shouldn't find yourself in that lane at the moment the X illuminates, let alone afterwards.

There's not enough gantrys to do all that.

They give brilliant advice over there, but will not take kindly to being messed around. I think someone has already called the 'get the popcorn in' line.

It's gone beyond popcorn ;) he's been told if all he wants is sympathy he needs to go to mumsnet :p

I was wrong about the location of the offence. The last 3 figures of a gantry's number represent the distance as on the nearby driver's location signposts.
It happened after I passed the road obstruction at the first gantry after it. Probably from behind a lorry I've changed from lane 2 to lane 1 without noticing the red X.
Does this offence deserve 3 points and fine?
    What mitigation can I add?
Can I get the awarness course offer again?

They put a lot of time and effort into helping people, but if they think they are being messed around then they can be a very tough bunch, and perhaps rightly so.

The problem is that the OP keeps changing or tweaking what he says he did every time someone raises an issue, they seem to have lost patience as the story has had more plot lines than a cheap soap...

I appreciate the effort of all those that gave a relevant opinion on the subject. At least now we learned something new, the last 3 figures in a gantry's reference number represents the same distance we can find on the driver's position signpost. We can't find this info on Google or Wikipedia and will save other peoples time of making FOI requests or bad choices.

You haven't driven through the location subject of this incident then? If there are no preceding gantries, the 50s and lane closure signals are illuminated on the preceding single matrix signs.

You may think that is important but in my 40 years of driving and covering close to a million miles I have never needed to know that and probably never will.

That's probably because you're not attempting a lame last-ditch Perry Mason-attempt defence of the indefensible.
