Hi fsrandom, thanks for the reply. Just last month I went on holiday and so ended up spending quite a bit over on calls home, which straddled 2 monthly payment periods. Otherwise it's around £45 per month usually.

I hadn't wanted an 18mth contract, but somehow my husband talked me round! I guess if I'm getting brand new top of range phone on a good tariff, and no cashback to have to claim (I got burned with Mobile Outlet) then it is actually worth doing.

I don't think that many people actually NEED a touchscreen PDA realistically, unless they use the phone for work; it is more something that people like to have. Until now, I've always gone for middle of range free handsets that I've been perfectly happy with and never bothered with anything high spec. But I do really like the sound of this phone and given the good deals around for it, thought I would treat myself to a fancy one just for once ;)

In particular, I want the built-in GPS (my husband has builtin GPS on his O2 XDA and it's fab, but it's a pain if I travel with work and want to use it, as I have to borrow his phone). Also, the unlimited free web access will be a hugely good thing for me to have - not only will I use it when away from home, but in particular I will use it a lot for matched betting.

Although I've used my husband's Windows mobile phone, I've not had one myself and have read VERY mixed reviews on the Omnia. I am more than 50% sure I'll like it, but I realise I may not, and if needs be I can always return within cooling off period and swap. Hoping I won't need to though!

Yours tips on taking additional SIMS and extras make really good sense, thanks for the suggestion, I hadn't really thought of that. If/when Vodafone call me back, I'll definitely ask about the options for that ;)

What was your average tarif cost, did you ever go over at all?

You have too remember the Omnia is very expensive and if you are asking for discounts / promotions aswell, you probobly haven't spent enough with Vodafone to warrent a £500 deal, especially if you're asking for a 12 month contract.

Is the Omnia the phone you even need? Do you need a fully touchscreen PDA? That's what the Omnia is. It's a Windows Mobile (Which, up untill this phone has been Business oreintated software) 6.1. I've heard people before now saying "Oh, it's Windows? It'll be like my PC Then!" Wrong, it's very difficult too use. Whilst this does have some perks it is very, very hard to get used too and use, coupled with touchscreen it's an absoluete nightmare if you are not used too the two.

I'm used too touchscreen and Windows Mobile and I hated the phone from the bat, some of the features are good, yes, but for general mobile usage there are better phones out there.

Don't go for a phone for the hype and/or potential feature list, go for a phone for usability and the features you're going to actually use/need. It's all good seeing a phone with a GPS receiver but you have too pay for this service anyway, same with most internet using features.

See about other possibilities, ask them what they can do for you. Tell them you'll let them setup 2 new Sim Only £10 deals for you if they give you a good deal. This works well for the Sales Agent and you can just call up once you receive them and cancel them.

Also take extras like 1 months Insurance free and 1 months Internet free and call up to cancel these aswell, all go in favour of the agents KPI's and he/she will be more likely to give you a better deal.

I am out of contract with Vodafone now and have asked what they can offer me with a N96

    been offered two deals

250 mins, 100 txts and unlimited internet or
150 mins, 500 txts and unlimited web

for £30, but need to contribute £50 for phone and is 18month.

how does this deal stack up?

They are best for talker and best for texter base £25 tariffs with £5 Vodafone Mobile Internet added on, however.

Considered the N96 is only available free of charge on £40 + tarifs and i'd say you've got an ok deal. You can do better tho.

If you want a touchscreen phone with GPS wait for the BlackBerry Storm which is reported to be released for contracts early November.

I'll be getting one, that's for sure.

    http://www.vodafone.com/start/about_vodafone/what_we_do/products_and_services/devices/blackberry_storm.html

The only "Implication" too having this phone is you'll need £5 unlimited internet and £5 BIS (Blackberry Internet Solution), but this does include unlimited SatNav, Push E-Mail, BlackBerry Pin-Messenger.

The fundimental differences I can see between the Storm and the Omnia is the Storm has a 3.2 MP Camera and does not have WiFi.

The Storm's camera will be on par either way, as BlackBerry always has very good quality lenses and software for there cameras, so I highly doubt you'll notice a difference.

WiFi, well, it's been reported it was either WiFi or GPS on the device and RIM (BlackBerry makers) thought it be more useful to have GPS instead, which, in all fairness, as the handset is 3G capable you won't exactly need WiFi.

BlackBerry also has functions such as compression, easy e-mail access and very good battery life. Also a generally very easy user interface and, with this new Storm, a "Clickable screen" to make it seem asthough you are using buttons.

Anyways, from someone who's used both devices, I honestly think the Omnia is pretty poor in comparison to the above model.

    Food for thought.

Side note: getting sat-nav on the Omnia is an utter pain in the bottom, reason for this is Vodafone Sat-Nav does not work with the device and you need either TomTom or Route66 for Windows Mobile, it's a big run around.

Thanks again - but just one question. You mention about paying for GPS on both the Omnia and the Blackberry, but I don't understand why you would have to do this? I thought the Omnia had build-in GPS

My husband's O2 XDA has build-in GPS too, so he just loaded up the TomTom maps and that's it, no charges any time that he uses it. I don't see how I could get charged for doing this?

AFAIK the software licence is £5 a month. If you buy TomTom or Garmin etc then there is no licence fee to pay :)
  • Just got 600 mins, unlimited texts, unlimited data with no phone for £12.50 a month!

My trusty Sony K800i does the job just fine for me so not bothered about a flash handest I'd end up scratching!

These phones only have a GPS receiver on then, meaning too use SatNav in itself you have to pay for licences from a carrier who provides you with the maps / satalites.

If you're husband didn't pay at all, there's more than likely a legality issue there, but I am aware you can put TomTom onto a Windows Mobile device for free, but yea, it's illegal :p

Ah right ok, I understand then. Yes after initially getting the software, he doesn't pay anything to continue using it so that explains it. Thanks. ;)

Why would you need someone senior for this? Directors deal with Director issues, not customer services.

191 from your Vodafone handset and talk to customer services, alternatively you can goto the Vodafone website and use the eForum or e-mail customer service.
