However, do I have to wait for the letter/email (it was an email last time as I recall) before I cancel? Timing is a bit tight as we move out on Friday and new tenants move in on Monday.

They have announced it on their website so I don't think you need to wait.

quick question as existing bt broadband as i may have gone about this the wrong way.

had ann email fromm sky today to say that i could have fibre as bt have been unable to provide it since moving into new home in november.

checked on bt and it says that a slot was available (my cabinet has had limited capacity).

attempted to phone bt to place order but could not get through so conntacted sky and placed order.

I then logged onto my bt account this eveninng and tthe price rise was mentiioned on my home page so i rang and put a cancelation through. the guy was helpful and said that i would now have a 30 day window for a new provider to take over the contract ie by the 23rd february. He explained that he would not cancel it now as the new provider would not be able to take over the service.

he also said that fiibre was not available at my address and when i checked just now I could see that the cabinet had no availability again.

i have now had an email from bt to say that they have been contacted by a provider to change my broadband etc and that i would now have to pay £221 for the rest of the contract for the broadband

Have i cocked this up as i spoke to sky first then BT.

also what happens with bt sports as the same emaill says that my bt sports would noow be £21 a month as i will no longer have broadband with bt. i currently pay £6 a month for bt sports. there was no mention of a price rise on my account for bt sports. i dont want to move if i will have to pay these cancelation charges especially bt sports. is bt sports a rolling 12 month contract. martin in his article says that bt sports can also be cancelled with out charge.

worst case scenerio is that i cancel the sky order which i assume i can do with the cooling off period

Thanks Darren. That page doesn't mention any about being able to cancel, but I'll give it a try!

We have a charge of £0 for "BT Sport Lite" on our bill which we didn't ask for and don't use (we don't have a TV). Presumably we will start paying an extra £3.50 on our bill from August BUT WE DON'T HAVE A TV. How can we get this charge/service removed? Not keen to spend ages on the phone as I suffer from anxiety and being kept on hold listening to music causes me enormous stress. Also worried about trying to remove it online in case it cocks up our existing Broadband deal.

easy way to beat bt price hikes.

    leave and never come back.

i've have had my own house for the last 8 years. only had bt for the first year.

roughly every year since i have had alternative suppliers who have been half the price of bt.

at a rough estimate i reckon i've saved nearly £1500.
  • If the How prices are changing info is correct then I'll make a saving.
I currently pay £46.24 per month for Standard BB + line rental + anytime calls(No tied contract - no longer pay line rental saver)

When reading new pricing as stated on info it says:

Standard broadband – from 2 April, this will increase by £2/mth. The 'all-in' price, which covers line rental as well, will go from £33.99/mth to £35.99/mth.

Unlimited anytime landline calls package – rising from £8.49/mth to £8.99/mth.

    Total: £44.98

Don't you have to wait until they contact you before you can leave penalty free, and not just announce the price rises? From the MSE page related to the news it states:

"To ensure you can leave penalty-free, you must let BT know you're leaving within 30 days of it giving you official notification of the price rises (which should arrive by letter)."

Its only if you have BT Sport via BT TV or Sky that the price will rise. I'm pretty sure the 'BT Sport Lite' which you get for free as a BT broadband customer is just to watch via the app and there is no change to this price.

To afoxeloni and anyone wondering what exactly will change, use steveE2's helpful link he posted earlier in the thread:

If BT have officially announced the price rise when you ordered sky, then shouldn't be a problem as long as you stated the reason for leaving was the price rise/material detriment.
As for the sports, it maybe a 12 month contract, in which case the £21 might be correct.

Sky following suit with a 9% increase in line rental. Isn't competition great?
  • I signed up to a new 12 month contract last Thursday. It wasn't the best deal as we moved house in September last year which renewed my line rental contract for 12 months! So I had very little bargaining power..
However as I'm still within the 14 days to cancel my new broadband contract should I do so and instead wait for my increase letter which will allow me to cancel broadband and line rental?
