So with virgin and other providers when you say you are going to leave because of the price rise they can give you a discount or apply credit to your account.

BT don't do this then ?

##last year BT service and price rise .
I simply followed instructions on the letter/ email to cancel without penalty within 30 days .
Before phoning i knew what i wanted and how much it would cost from another provider .
Phoned the given number and said i wanted to take the option to cancel . After a bit of debate and me quoting other ISPs prices i got a slightly enhanced service at 45p a month less than the current contract . Advanced Line Rental was also taken out at the pre price increase amount .

Note if you just cancel without going through the proper channels or just swap ISP then its not a penalty free get out you will be charged for breaking your contract .

This is a tired old argument.

The same way as Virgin manage to deliver broadband without charging extra for line rental. It is essential for the delivery of broadband and included in the price, and listed as an extra if you only want phone calls.

What difference does that make? Well, it lets BT, each time they deliver one of their multiple price rises per year, be very careful to only increase line rental OR broadband costs each time, meaning that you can't cancel both in the case where you pay for line rental using line rental saver. It keeps them holding you over a barrel.
Old it may be but that doesn't make it any less true, Virgin have spent literally billions of pounds creating their own door to door infrastructure and will spend billions more to expand it, Virgin customers are paying for that, it's just not called line rental.

And after so many grumbled that free or cheap broadband needing line rental was misleading, we get combined prices which actually work out (except for the odd offer) more than the sum of the original prices.

Stupid question, I know, but once I let BT know I want to cancel, can I just proceed with ordering another service online the usual way, and let them manage the switch?

Yes but you cannot just cancel .
You follow the instructions on the price increase email when you get it .

You need to tell them you want to leave because of the price rise. But you want the line to remain active so another provider can take over the active line.

Super, thank you so much. The account at the moment is in someone else's name, although I pay it, and I can't wait to change it to my billing name a bit sooner than the contract would ordinarily allow.

    Hi there everyone

Very glad I spotted the article on MSE re the BT price hikes as I'm moving this week and renting out my house so I need to cancel my BT contract early (runs to August, and I don't need it where I'm moving to). Was feeling very unhappy about paying the early termination charges, particularly as the BT Infinity service I have hasn't been as speedy as promised!

However, do I have to wait for the letter/email (it was an email last time as I recall) before I cancel? Timing is a bit tight as we move out on Friday and new tenants move in on Monday.

If I call to cancel now saying I've seen the news that prices are rising and understand that I have the right to leave without incurring charges, will they accept that? Or do I HAVE to wait for the official notification?
