  • So sorry for your loss and the difficulties of the penultimate day.
I am able to report that when my mum was in her last days, in hospital, I was asked about a DNR to which I readily agreed. She was 92 and was not going to get better. The staff were kind and did their best to keep her comfortable.
Although I was telephoned early one morning to say she would not last, I decided not to make the journey(an hour and a half) as I doubted I would get there in time, and I had said my goodbyes the previous evening. They understood. I have no regrets about that.
I do regret not getting her moved to a private nursing home for her last days, not because she was badly treated in hospital, but to give her, and the family, more privacy, peace and quiet. Hospitals are such noisy places.
I do so agree that death should not be the taboo it is. I can't get DH to talk about the future and to make plans and preparations. He gets quite cross if I try, and says he thinks I wish him dead. I am just trying to be practical, now that we are both in our seventies, though I hope we have many years of good health ahead.

I so agree.......a good nursing home which can provide quality palliative care or a hospice is far preferable to a noisy hospital bed in a shared bay.

It sounds like you and your husband are just not on the same page with this. It is unwise to force the issue, it will only upset him and cause friction between you. Just let it rest, maybe he will open up when he's ready.
