  • I have a Volvo XC60 on motability. I picked it up 3 weeks ago. Lovely car it is too. I had to pay £2749 upfront for it and about £57 per week out of my enhanced mobility pip.
Im not a scrounger. I worked for 35 years before being diagnosed with an incurrable cancer (which badly affects my mobility) earlier this year. I've just finished 6 months of chemotherapy and will continue to have maintenance chemo over the next 2 years in a bid to suppress the cancer.
Why shouldn't I have a nice car of my choosing? Im paying for it out of the pip im entitled to.
    The op sounds very bitter...
  • Oh, and i have a blue badge too

Just don't tell the OP you're in social housing. That will be too much for him. :D

Parking? I am so tired of seeing able-bodied people using Blue Badge bays, then receiving abuse from people just like you, when I point out what they are doing. I and every other Blue Badge holder that I know, is aware that we cannot park wherever we are liable to cause a traffic hazard.

You need to concentrate on your own lives, all you mindless, unsympathetic, pathetic, critics with no understanding of wat it is like to have a condition, or conditions, which would make every day a misery, for them. For us, we just get on with our lives and make the most of it. Until someone makes a Thread like this. Grow up and grow a pair!

Funny that, in your first paragraph you say you are sick of being abused when you tell people not to park in disabled bays.
In the second sentence you say people should concentrate on their own lifes.

    Can you see the contradiction?

Funny that a disabled person would be oblivious to the fact not all disabilities are obvious.

Not all disabilities are permanent though, don't see why sonebody with a temporary injury shouldn't be able to use the spaces. Also not all disabled people have badges.
Then taxis have been known to park in them to aid disabled passengers.

Although that's more of an issue in private car parks where blue badges count for nothing than in public spaces where councils issue tickets.

Theirs a lot of ignorant able bodied people about. There's also a lot of self righteous ignorant disabled people about. It's not all one sided

OK, muscle has asked his question again. It's his thread remember - he asks why such expensive cars are available on Motability. I think that's a fair enough question without all the baggage that has accumulated in this thread.
Answer - why can't disabled people have nice cars too? How do you know whether that person works or not, or how much they earn? How do you know how much they contributed to their car?
Last time I checked, it could be used as approx £20,000 towards a new car. That would obviously cover the cost of a Clio with change, or can be put towards a more expensive car - one that's easier to get in and out of, that will store a wheelchair PLUS shopping, an automatic, ALL things that can be useful to disabled people.
Manufacturers do different deals with Motability at different times, and especially when models are unpopular or about to be replaced, they can be relatively inexpensive. Again, it's important to ignore the list price of a car, because Motability won't be paying near that.
And remember that all these cars being bought makes our second hand cars cheaper!
  • I have not read the whole thread but thankfully it does seem as if the OP is in the minority. We are looking into motability cars at the moment for my brother who has ms and there is an allowance which goes towards the cost of leasing a car so I am sure an expensive car will entail those wanting one having to top up with extra money. What is wrong with that? Maybe the merc or Audi is easier to get into for someone with a disability and even if they just want one why shouldn't they? If they are paying the extra themselves it is no one else's business.

People are getting upset about other people (deserving or not) getting a 'free car'. Given how much it costs to run a car these days, I can see their point. What they are missing is that these people are in receipt of a mobility allowance which they are choosing to take in the form of a car - they could easily have it in cash instead and spend it on taxis, and the taxpayer would be no worse off. Anyone who objects to the 'free car' is in reality objecting to the mobility allowance itself, which is a completely different issue.

If my non-working neighbour was driving about in a new Audi while I was making ends meet in a 15-year-old Corsa, I would question it too. I hope, after learning a bit about the situation, that I would change my opinion.

I had a relative who was deafened in an accident. We employed a particularly useless solicitor to claim damages. There was nothing that could be done to make him hear. I wanted the solicitor to tell me how much cash you normally get for loss of hearing. The cash could maybe buy a car or holiday or TV etc. There seemed no logical answer. Who decided how many holidays or cars was equal to loss of hearing? Our solicitor certainly was clueless.
In the same way the state is giving cars to people who pass a disability test. This means that a disabled person is FINANCIALLY better off than an IDENTICAL able bodied person. The money can't stop them being disabled but makes life more pleasant. I am not sure how you could ever devise a system that rewards each disability fairly as each disability is different.
