It seems that Mobilty cars nowadays are becoming more and more upmarket i know of one a brand new Volvo xc90 Retailing at some £46k why are people on mobilty able to access such cars, why cant they have a run of the mill Focus and a max engine size of say 1.8d. Been able to access such high value cars and get everything paid for bar the fuel surely makes the system more attractive to fraudsters. Next they will want us to pay any speeding tickets etc. Sorry but i find it wrong that this sort of vehicle etc is out of reach to the average person financially. So why is the system allowing such over spend etc. Plus many who have mobilty cars treat them like a complete tip.

I dont think that you fully understand the scheme.

You should google and research first.

Before getting all Daily Maily Waily you did stop to check and understand how the scheme works, didn't you?

A person who qualifies for DLA or PIP at the higher mobility rate gets an allowance of £57.45 a week. They are also entitled to "free" car tax one vehicle. That is to help them with the extra costs that they suffer because of their disability.

As an alternative, they can exchange those payments and the ree car tax for a car on the Motability scheme. Depending on the car they choose they may, or may not, have to also make a down-payment out of their own funds. For the base level Volvo XC60 that's currently £1799.

What cars are available, and what downpayments are required, are entirely up to the vehicle makers, negotiated with Motability, and usually involve shifting less popular models.

But, whatever offers the makers give, it doesn't cost you, the poor downtrodden outrage-bus rider, a single penny more than if they just keep the allowance and use it to buy and run a banger.
  • If you wish, you can have my left leg that doesn't work, crumbling spine, that will leave me paralyzed from the waist down in time. And the lack of sleep from pain, despite Tramadol, and sleeping tablets.

You do that, and you can have my "free" car too.

What a bloody load of clap trap. I'm fed up with people like you, I've had abuse that I'm too young to be using disabled bays! To idiots asking why someone with mobility issues has a 4x4, far easier to climb in using handle and steps, and then slide out, rather than try to climb up out of a regular car.

The cars are not free, we get an allowance to help us get around, buses, taxis, etc, but some of us choose to spend it on a car, it is far from free.

What a judgmental, nasty person you are.

It's most likely the usual guilty excuses that people make for buying a somewhat fancy car.

Should listen to a Tesla owner trying to justify spending £80'000 on a family saloon, money saving? really? helping the environment by using energy produced by burning fossil fuels? really?
    Nah, it's just excuses.

    1. The xc90 isn't available on the scheme
    2. You rent the cars, they are not free
    3. I'm not entirely sure how my wife, her electric wheelchair or winch would fit in a ford focus
    4. If you want to be paralysed from the waist down like my wife, go ahead.

My wife had a crv, its currently the only vehicle on the market that can fit her equipment. It costs £57 a week and a £2,499 deposit. Of course we could give it up to make you feel less envious of her paralysis, as I assume you would feel a lot better if she wasn't able to get to work.

If you're in a Tesla you have the POTENTIAL to use no fossil fuels, if you've got solar panels for example. But even when you do use fossil fuel, you will be using LESS by driving on electric, than with diesel or petrol.

Muscle seems to take issue with the fraud. Fraud is bad, mmkay, but the answer to fraud is not to take all the nice things off the genuine users!

Do you know you can (or could) have a BMW 1-series convertible on Motability? Isn't that discgraceful? No. You've to pay extra for it of course, and the guy that I saw that was in one had problems getting in and out of a car - answer? remove the roof ever time he gets in and out!

There are some in this thread that would benefit from reading this and other articles:

    https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2015/feb/05/disabled-people-super-bowl-advert-deaf-nfl-footballer-derrick-coleman

"Another issue with “inspiration !!!!!!” is how polarised the way disabled people are seen has become. Right now, in the UK, disabled people are on the whole seen as either scroungers or “supercrips”. We’re either a drain on society, in which case we are seen as taking something from you, or we’re an example to look up to, in which case, you want to take something – inspiration – from us. The reality is that most of us are neither of these things."

I consider myself fortunate as Im not disabled, but if i had a choice of being fully able bodied or being disabled and being entitled to a 'free car', i know which one i would choose every time.

Why would anyone begrudge mobility assistance to someone, someone who without it would be housebound???
