Without looking into it I would guess the extra cost in administrating a means tested system would outweigh the cost of making it universal.
There's also the problem that many of those who need and deserve the help refuse to apply for means-tested benefits, as they're felt to be "shameful" or "intrusive".

    No, he's(?) obviously a troll.

One of a handful of posters who go around on this forum being deliberately argumentative, obtuse and sometimes down right nasty until they get PPR'd and sign up with another username and start it all again.

Not saying he doesn't sometimes know his stuff, but his manner of posting is designed to belittle and promote his own self importance.

I would guess that was a problem a few decades ago, but is pretty rare now.

It may well be with the general population but it certainly isn't among sufferers of disability.

Having to parade not only what's "wrong" with you but also the fact that you're suffering hardship in front of everyone (as it can feel like you're doing) is something that a civilised society shouldn't require of people.

The forms for disability claims are already a lot more intrusive and a lot harder to deal with than most people realise. Most people don't like "asking for help" anyway and going into great detail with strangers about what's "wrong" with you and how it means you can't wipe your own !!!! in the morning - or even get to the toilet in time for that to be a problem in the first place - isn't pleasant. Add to that requiring them to prove that they can't support themselves without help because of it would simply be cruel.

Of course, those posters showing their antisocial (in the strict literal sense) attitudes above wouldn't care about little details like that, but any decent human being with compassion or any level of empathy would be happy to lend a hand.

Bear in mind that, for all the huge figures quoted by some of the Nasties above, at £57 per week for higher rate mobility DLA / PIP and with about 26 million taxpayers in the UK, the cost to each taxpayer is about one penny per year for every 100 claims.

If someone objects to paying one penny a year to help 100 people live with some dignity then, frankly, they need to take a long hard look in the mirror!

I understand it, you get a hand out payed for by the tax payer.
Some who get the hand out work others don't.

Would you rather be the one paying out, or would you prefer to lose a couple of limbs and take the 'hand out'?

Where's the nail hit on head emoji?

My friend chose to have her bowel removed and moved to a colostomy bag so she wouldn't continue to have the indignity of having to rely on someone else to wipe her !!!!.

I'm able bodied but do know how disabled people feel. Dignity and freedom is what they want, and the only way to have that is to be able to have the freedom to move when they want to move not when others are able to 'help them out'.

I wouldn't wish the same conditions on these posters or their close friends and families, but it might take that for them to have any empathy.

If you wish, you can have my left leg that doesn't work, crumbling spine, that will leave me paralyzed from the waist down in time. And the lack of sleep from pain, despite Tramadol, and sleeping tablets.

You do that, and you can have my "free" car too.

What a bloody load of clap trap. I'm fed up with people like you, I've had abuse that I'm too young to be using disabled bays! To idiots asking why someone with mobility issues has a 4x4, far easier to climb in using handle and steps, and then slide out, rather than try to climb up out of a regular car.

The cars are not free, we get an allowance to help us get around, buses, taxis, etc, but some of us choose to spend it on a car, it is far from free.

What a judgmental, nasty person you are.

Firstly. I know what living in pain is like. I also know what weeks of broken sleep is like. Being woken up by the pain in tears and agony.

Unfortunately and like always there are people who abuse the system. There is nothing wrong with the system it works. It helps dealership and end users. Win win.

The issue is that some people do manipulate the system.

In another life I used to run car dealerships and know the Motability Scheme very well. Years of people openly abusing the system did harden me.

Like the young PE teacher who used to give her nan the £57 or so pounds a week so she could have her car allowance???

Like the couple who always had the most amazing cars because relatives where registered disabled.

I am not for one milli second saying that you or anyone I know does this. Far from it but as always nasty self serving people who abuse the system make it difficult for legitimate people who genuinely benefit to not be tarred with the same brush.

After all genuine people using the system as it is meant to be used will not make headlines.

    Sensationalizing and outing abusers does.

It is not often that I used to get upset a work but once I have to say I was reduced to floods of tears.

I lady came in looking at a very expensive car???? Nothing wrong in that but then she said that she wanted to know the advanced rental on mobility.

OK I was wrong years of PE teachers etc I was not being as helpful as I could. Anyway long story short she made an appointment to come back and test drive.

When she did she brought her severely disabled 19 year old daughter. Her daughter was prone to fits and had both physical and mental issues. The only thing that would clam her down was listening to a children's toy playing puff the magic dragon. I have seen a lot of things but this was one of the most upsetting things I have ever seen. A mother trying to look after he daughter who is punching and kicking her until the music is played. Broke my heart.

She needed the big car as because her daughter was so big she could not lift her in and out so needed it to be modified to allow for ramps and wheelchairs.

God I have never been so humiliated or so utterly sorry for prejudging someone in my entire life. Just because you can not see a disability it does not mean that there is not one.

Pay out and much much more but only to people who need it.

I am 71 this year and classed as disabled. Even as a single parent in the 70's I worked 2 jobs so as not to claim Benefits. I was, apparently ENTITLED to child benefit.

    I had 3 children, have 12 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.

When I became disabled (or, classed as disabled) following years of health issues, (I do not and never have smoked or drank) I was interviewed and prodded and poked by all manner of people in order to Prove to them that I was ENTITLED to a disability allowance.

When I turned 60 I was automatically ENTITLED to a state pension as I had worked until 55 when my health problems started.

I drive, and for a while had a Motability Car which I PAID FOR ON A MONTHLY BASIS from my entitled benefit. At that time even an automatic car cost an extra deposit!

However, as my disability progressed it became apparent that I would need an adapted car and I could not afford to pay for this on top of the amount being already taken from my entitled allowance.

I now have no car, I have an allowance of £57 per week instead. I am housebound, and hardly ever see any of my family now.

I would ask those who have made disparaging comments on here to think of their own relatives and would they be happy if this happened to them? Certainly not a FREE car under any circumstances and neither am I the scum of the earth.

1st You are exactly what DLA is for. it is to help people keep their mobility. Personally I would talk to Motability they can help. There are a able under certain circumstances to help with the cost of adaptions under the forms of grants etc. So if there is a chance (and please forgive me I do not know the extent of your mobility )that you could regain some of your independence why not try.
