I must be stupid. Please bear with me.

If the recipient of the benefit chooses not to lease a car, but spends it on his weekly groceries, would you say the state was providing food and drink? Or is it only cars that you find morally reprehensible?

What he and others don't get is that the ability to get around when you choose to, not when someone is free to assist you is as important as daily food. Many disabled people would retreat and die a lonely death first internally and then physically and they would end up being a heavier burden on the state, being unemployable and in need of round the clock care.

Some people can't see the necessity of something which they themselves simply take for granted.

Taking GTE Boy's logic a little further ...

I receive a state pension. I choose to spend some of that running a Mercedes. Has the state given me a Mercedes?

Why is "Disabled drive expensive cars" more shocking (to some people) than "Wealthy pensioner drives expensive car"?

It is the payment of DLA that needs looking at. My elderly relative had arthritis. She could walk round the house and walk to her husband's car. He drove her wherever she wanted to go. He had a good pension and would always want to own a car. She seems to have received DLA to help pay for her 'mobility needs'. She received a monthly payment for approx 25 years and has not appeared to spend an extra penny on her 'mobility costs'. Was she supposed to pay him as a taxi driver? He always had plenty of cash. It just seems unnecessary government spend to me. Can anyone explain what she was supposed to do with the money?

Just to add to the argument/discussion about buying a secondhand car or getting a new motability car if you get a "free" motability car you loose nearly £3,000 a year and there are limitations on things like fitting a tow bar, adding an extra driver, going abroad etc.
We prefer to buy a 3 year old ex-motability car, sell it after 3 years and buy another. Costs a bit less than the £9,000 we would have lost in payments plus we can modify the car to suit us and go abroad for three months if we want to.

I couldn't believe it when I first discovered the state were giving out brand new cars every 3 years. Some motability cars need adapting so adapting a brand new car using it for 3 years and then adapting another seemed crazy.
If you came on this forum and said "I am thinking of a JUST ADD FUEL contract. What do you think?" Everyone would say "Well that is the most expensive way of running a car." The state should be looking for cheaper solutions.
I kept my last car for 17 years. Never needed any major work. Just servicing, tyres etc. If I had been on motability the state would have paid for 6 brand new cars in that period. Unbelievable.
Disabilty benefits are a massive part of public spending and the government needs to get it under control. They need to target their spending better.
Have you got a job and earn a reasonable amount? -buy your own car like everyone else.
Have you savings over £20K - buy your own.
If you are unemployed where do you need to go to?
Could someone in the family with a car take you?
It would seem to make sense for disabled people to shop online and have it delivered.
I always feel sorry for unemployed people staying healthy and looking for work. Unemployment benefits cost the government about £3bn, while incapacity, disability & injury benefits cost £41bn pounds.

    Your ignorance astounds me.

Are you saying that because im disabled i shouldnt leave my house even to go shopping?

If i didnt use the mobility element of my PIP to pay for a motability car, i would have to get a taxi to and from the hospital 3 times per week. That would cost far more than I pay for the lease on my car

This is being dealt with. Everyone is changing over to PIP. There are lots if people who have been on the higher rate of DLA for years now losing it and having to hand their cars back

I must of been stupid when I picked up my brand new Volvo XC60 on Motability that you help to provide via the state, because maybe I should of picked a Fiesta and would of saved you some money, but then it's really my money to choose on what I use it for.:rotfl::rotfl:

    BTW

Your username really speaks volumes to what sort of person you are.

12 pages and still round we go.

There's no 'free' anything relating to the benefit system, it's all paid for by taxpayers. If people like GTE Boy and Muscle750 have an issue with how it's run then I suggest rather than exposing themselves as the horrible human beings they are on internet forums they put their energy into changing the system. Although I'd be surprised if they can find enough people who support their views to get them into a position to do that.

    Fixed that for you.

Are you too thick to understand the motability scheme?

Every disabled person who is ill enough to qualify for the higher rate of mobility is awarded a certain amount of money every week to help with the extra costs that arise from that disability. It is up to that person how they spend that money. I choose to use mine to lease a car. Why is that a problem to you what kind of car I have? Its not costing the taxpayer any extra for me to have a Volvo XC60 rather than an Astra. The only person who had to pay extra was me with the downpayment.

The other part of the PIP I receive is an amount for daily living. I pay for a carer to come in a couple of times per week to help me with personal care and a cleaner for a few hours to keep my home clean. Should this stop too?

Would you rather disabled people didnt get any help? As I said in an earlier post, I worked full time for 35 years until I became ill last year and had to finish work.

The criteria for claiming this benefit is much stricter than the old DLA benefit and lots of disabled people are having the new PIP assessments and losing their cars.

So the tax payer pays for the person on benefits? Can't disagree with you there.

So what you're saying is the tax payer pays for others free meals.
