They obviously needed it for a disability. Not.
And how many people are in the house?
Chances are the "classic" car is only used for a limited number of miles either due to insurance (a lot are on very limited mileage policies), reliability, or comfort reasons.
Also many disabled people are married or live with families, I know this may come as shock, but those family members may well have their own cars just like in any other family!
It doesn't mean that the disabled person doesn't still need their own car.
If they're like a lot of people I know with a motorbility car and a second, the "runabout" is likely to be relatively cheap and not necessarily reliable but needed for a family member to get to work.
Oh and two normal cars + a classic is not a "fleet", not in this day and age in many areas, many families seem to have at least two cars now, edging to 3 or more in many cases if there is a late teen (or older) living at home. About a third of the families on my street seem to own at least two cars, with several at 3 or more active cars (classic and hobby vehicles* not included as they tend to be not be "regular use")
*such as the beaten up landrover one neighbour has, or the old sporty car another pulls out of the garage for a few runs a year.0 -
I couldn't believe it when I first discovered the state were giving out brand new cars every 3 years. Some motability cars need adapting so adapting a brand new car using it for 3 years and then adapting another seemed crazy.
If you came on this forum and said "I am thinking of a JUST ADD FUEL contract. What do you think?" Everyone would say "Well that is the most expensive way of running a car." The state should be looking for cheaper solutions.
I kept my last car for 17 years. Never needed any major work. Just servicing, tyres etc. If I had been on motability the state would have paid for 6 brand new cars in that period. Unbelievable.
Disabilty benefits are a massive part of public spending and the government needs to get it under control. They need to target their spending better.
Have you got a job and earn a reasonable amount? -buy your own car like everyone else.
Have you savings over £20K - buy your own.
If you are unemployed where do you need to go to?
Could someone in the family with a car take you?
It would seem to make sense for disabled people to shop online and have it delivered.
I always feel sorry for unemployed people staying healthy and looking for work. Unemployment benefits cost the government about £3bn, while incapacity, disability & injury benefits cost £41bn pounds.0 -

You're being rather disingenuous with those figures and you know it. Have you ever thought of becoming an MP?
How much did Motability cost? Not £41bn, I will guarantee. What you also need to remember is that when someone claiming jobseekers is to ill to look for work, they have to sign in as sick and this then gets taken out of the incapacity budget. Be very wary before you quote statistics. That 41bn includes long term sick, sick, disability and injuries. Some of these will also be unemployed.
The whole point of DLA/PIP is that it gives people individual freedoms that they would not otherwise have. Why should someone already living with a lifelong disability be denied the same freedoms as you and I? Why should they always be cap in hand to relatives and physically reliant on other people to get around? It also reduces the carer budget.0 -

The cars are provided by Motability, which is a charity, not a state department.
And they're leased, not given away. Because it's a non-profit organisation, the leasing rates are lower than elsewhere.0 -
You were right not to believe it, because it's simply not true.

It's a play on words which ever way you look at it.0 -

No, it doesn't.0 -
No, it doesn't.
Actually the promotion of both independence, and of ability to get to appointments and treatment both help to reduce that burden.
Take it from someone who is disabled, doesn't have a motability vehicle, but hates people like you with a passion.
If you want to speak like that about us, please do say it to my face, and see what I can guarantee will happen. I may not be able to see properly, but there's nothing wrong with my limbs.0 -

I suppose it depends from which planet you're looking.
Here on earth the statement "the state is giving out cars" is simply untrue on every level. It's not the state, and they're not given away. It betrays a complete lack of understanding of how the scheme works,
How that can be described as a play on words is beyond me.0 -

The state give out money by way of benefits. You can use that benefit to get a car. So the state provide your car. It's not hard to comprehend unless you're stupid.0
