I would have thought that these topics would go right over the head of a toddler and so would be perfectly fine to discuss.

I for one, would rather not risk it, precisely BECAUSE they would not understand. Who knows what images they will get in their heads from some conversation where they didn't understand most of the words, but still heard 'children' 'hurt' 'by daddy' etc.?

Each to their own, but for me, no way, until they are old enough to understand, after age-appropriate explanation, and even then I would be careful with language.

I believe in discussing adult things with adults and having age appropriate conversation with or around children.

Not all the children in the group were toddlers, some were older.

Imagine someone holding forth on biology whose only knowledge of the subject is the Book of British Birds, and you have a rough idea of what it feels like to read Richard Dawkins on theology: Terry Eagleton

Indeed. I would have thought that as long as you refrained from swearing or discussing your sex life in graphic detail, there aren't many topics that you couldn't talk about in-front of a small child.

Not sure I agree, I visit 17 month twins once a week, they are starting to say words, also really repeating words/actions that I do, real mimics.

I've said to their mother quite seriously very soon we won't be able to talk as freely in front of them! :rotfl:

When my daughter was 5 she asked me what sexual assault was, she'd heard it on the radio news as we were driving.
You'd be surprised how much children don't miss!

I think that any child old enough to ask a coherent question is old enough to be given a response. In the case of your daughter I would go with something like "It is when a bad person touches you in a way you don't like".

Do you routinely say or do things in public that you'd be embarrassed for a child to copy?

I would also say something like that, if she asked the question, but it doesn't mean I would like to have an adult discussion about sexual abuse in her hearing!
