    @ michaelmichael,

Suggest you retry in a few weeks and completely change your approach.

    He probably called your bluff!

  • Well - What can I say - In one day I have saved myself and 5 friends a total of £720.

I first called for myself and said that I am trying to reduce my bills as I my partner is self employed and work isnt going to well at the mo so need to cut back (it was a total lie) and they offered me £10 discount per month.

Put the phone down and called my sister who didnt have the nerve so I called for her and got her the same.

Then called 4 other friends and each time gave them a sob story i.e. Going through retirement and need to save some cash, just had a baby so need the money and each time they offered me £10 discount each month.

£720 in one day is fantastic - thank you so much for this link.

if you have been with them over a year and have a few services it seems as though they will take off £10 (they told me i was getting free phone line rental). that is the only thing i got because i was paying so little for my tv deal as it was.

if you are paying more then you can get a bigger discount. i told my friend about this (been with ntl 18 months), currently paying over £70 monthly. £30 for family pack digital, £25 broadband, £15 for unlimited phone calls (line rental already free), plus a few other phone extras. initially phoned up and was told by a "miserable" person she was only authorised to give £10 discount with the phone deal free for 3 months, and if you want to cancel we can do that. my friend said she would think about it.

called back a few hours later and spoke to someone else, went through to someone else who was apparently more senior than first person and went through the story again. after initially only offering £20 discount, friend was asked what price she was thinking of and said £30-40 per month. the person suddenly changed his stance and said we can give it to you for £39.50 a month.

thats nearly a £400 a year saving! and this was just by sticking to the line that deals could be got for cheaper elsewhere (ie. freeview box instead of £30 a month to ntl, various broadband offers for as low as £15). keep at it and make big savings! ;D

    thanks love a bargain

    just saved myself £108
it almost makes life worth living
  • We have base tv pack and telephone line rental (£19.95 per mth) broadband (£17.99 per month) with NTL.

I just rang them to say we had bought a freeview box and could they tell me how much our bill would be without the TV option on it.  They said that phone line rental is £9.95 (ie without TV we would save £10 per month overall).  Before I could say 'cut us off', they said that as we have been customers for a while and have all 3 services, they offered to give us a £10 credit on our bill every month for 12 months to save them sending an engineer to come and get our set-top box and install a modem!

That was that - now we get all the same services but it's £10 a month cheaper!  Just for a (freephone) phone call to them!  How's that for a moneysaving tip?!

    Bargain.

I would definitely recommend giving them a call if you're a customer, telling them you don't want a particular service because you're getting it elsewhere, and seeing if they will offer you any incentive to stay with them.  It worked for us!

    ;D

Please make sure you ring up and cancel this after your month's free trial. They offered us a free trial and then the month after that we got an extra expensive bill from them. They assume you want to keep this service at the end of your free trial and will automatically charge you for it! WATCH OUT!

    Loving the thread everyone!!

I signed up with NTL about 18 months ago on a deal that gave you £10 discount per month if you took out Broadband £17.99 with 24 hour free calls (£9.50 + £15.50). So for £32.99 + mobile calls I thought I had a pretty good deal especially as I got 1MB broadband for the first couple of months for the same price and yes I did remember to cancel it. 8)

Anyway after reading a couple of the threads on this site I decided to give it a go, I had received a flyer through the door for new customers taking out more than 1 service (I have 3, phone, Broadband and inclusive calls) to get their phone rental for free. So I rang up and told them I'd got the flyer and WOOHOO £120 Thank you very much everyone.

I'm leaving it a week or so then I'm going to cancel my inclusive call service as well in favour of using 18866 :o

I'll let you know how I get on hehehe!!

    ;D

  • Fantastic tip. I've just been on the phone to NTL and although they made it difficult, they finally offered me a £120/yr discount.

Keep at it - it was my fourth call with every person before the last agreeing that if i wanted to reduce my costs I would have to leave NTL.

It appears that the best discounts are offered to those who have more than just the basic packages - if this is you, haggle like mad!

    Thanks again.

    ;)
    look after the pennies....
  • just spoken to the miserable gits, but they won't put me through to the disconections department because the accounts in my girlfriends name. Although i am outhorised to phone up and give them more money by ordering better services, i'm unable to cancel services! i explained that it is hard for my girlfriend to phone up and speak to them because she works office hours, that's why my name was added to the account so i could sort out all the problems with them.

obviously i wasn't going to cancel but just wanted to save money(should have been a lot too, i've got phone, broadband and most expensive cable package), but they've infuriated me now so i probably will just get my girlfriend to cancel it all, unless they give us a really good deal!!! ;)
Be ALERT - The world needs more LERTS
  • ive been with ntl now for 17 monthes, i have their 150k broadband £17.99 and fone line for £9.50, i rang up to try and get alittle more discount, i use the broadband every day but hardly use the fone, but the miserable lot wouldnt give me anything. I told them i was expecting a baby at christmas (which i am) but i was told that they couldnt do anything for me! :-[
