Hi, I did this myself on friday, I think you have to seriously mean it though, 'cos I did, I said I am going back to BT and buying a freeview box! I told the operator I was heartily sick of all the offers they have for new customers and nothing for the people that have stayed with them for years, i.e. MOI! So he offered me the whole family package for what i am paying now £19.50 a month!!! Anyone know how much i have saved? ;D

You have saved £9.50 per month The family pack is £29.
I myself rang them and said I would prefer the Broadband modem instead of the setop box but would like to keep the phone line. They have been and carried out the change over free of charge with free modem and given me 30days free Broadband but signed me up to a new account and committed to 12months but this is ok by me. I then bought a freeview Thompson box which recieves add on TV an extra ten channels for £7.99 per month UK Gold Discovery Etc. So I am now very happy or will be when I sign up for 18886

Just love these money saving tips.

  • i have been reading this post with interest.
i have had ntl broadband for over a year, have a bt telephone line with talk talk, and am thinking of getting freeview for tv.
i want to stay with bt for phone, and ntl for broadband. any ideas what kind of deal i might get if i phone ntl asking for their tv package, but do the usual 'i'll go elewhere then', if they don't offer a deal!

so you are going to ring them to sign up for a tv deal and then threaten to go elsewhere if they don't give you a deal?

erm I wouldn't hold your breath over being offered anything other than their standard deals, they will probably just remove the phone rental from the price if anything. Maybe they'll offer something for customer loyalty.... ::)
  • Just beat the £120. Got about £180.

Had phone, 750 K broadband and talk unlimited.

Read Martin's tips and thought; I can save lots of money here.

Worked out could save £16 per month then do calls via the 16688 prefix number (or whatever it is).

Rang NTL via thier 151 number and said "I am paying too much, been with you 18 months and lots of other people offering more for less. What are you going to do to keep me."
"Nothing I can do Sir came the reply, we have no offers available."
"OK" said I. "Please give me the number for disconnections".
    "Certainly Sir".

I rang dissconnetions (AKA Customer relations) and repeated the story with a few additions and prices they had to match.

Got Phone, broadband and 24 hour unlimited talk (useful as I work in a technical sales position from home and ring businesses all over the country) for £32.74. :D

Their proper price is £49.99 and I was paying £43.49 + daytime calls previously.

I could have saved more by dropping to a lower internet speed but I need fast access for my eBay activities. This price is fixed for 12 months and I have no hassle of changing. It is costing me around £4.00 per month more than the cheapest I could find elsewhere without calls but no hassle and free calls to landlines anytime.

Moral of the story is ring up and if they don't want to know find out the customer relations number and ring direct. They don't want to lose good paying customers.

    Simon

p.s. For Kirklees area direct customer relations number is 01642 643000 :D:D
  • not bad...ive been paying 12.49 for 600K, now 750K broadband for past 2 years...i had to sign up the phone and free local/national calls phone tarrif though which is about 17.50....so you have slightly bettered mine...though i hardly use the home phone as i work for a mobile telco where i get free calls.

Great suggestion - thanks! I just rang up threatening to cancel because 'my friend had just given me a Freeview box he no longer needed after having Sky put in' (haha) and they are now giving me a year's free line rental (£9.50 a month).

Freeview is a little box that costs about £60 that you connect to your television. The result is that you receive digital television.
You get all the usual channels plus ITV2, BBc 3 & 4. A history channel...several homestyle channels and lots of Buying channels, all at no extra cost.

It can't be received in all areas and some people have to have stronger aeriels... In my case I just connected it and it works

  • Yahoo!!!! thankyou martin and everyone else on this site. you are an inspiration. i have been paying ntl about £50 a month for their broadband and talk unlimited phone package, i just rang their customer service 0800 052 0243 and in my sweetest voice explained that since being at home with my toddler and not working (true) i am having to economise and noticed that wanadoo and bt etc now charge about £17.99 for similar broadband, felt i had no option but to cancel (sniff sniff) he said ok and i would be disconnected on 13 th nov (was now getting a bit worried) so asked once i was disconnected when would ntl consider me a new cust and when would i be able to get one of their better packages, he said there werent any (liar) and asked me to hold whilst he had a word with his manager. He then came back and told me that they would give me a £10 discount every month for 12 months. WHAT A RESULT!!! Am so happy :) ;D :D;)
