Sheffield City branch on Fargate has one of these machines. It's further from Leeds than York, but nearer than Northallerton.
  • That's certainly not true for the one in Kingston. The staff there even showed us how to use it (um, put your card in, put your coins in, take your card out!) so it's not like we used it when we weren't supposed to.

Kingston is a bit far for me to get to with huge carrier bags of coins. (Yep...i have that many !!!). I'm near Harlesden...does anybody know if a HSBC branch has a coin counting machine in ealing, hammersmith or anywhere else close by.
I've called the HSBC call centre and they really don't have a clue.

These machines are great. Went to the one in Canary wharf with my coin jar, inserted my debit card and fed all the coins in.
5 minutes later walked away with £110 in my account. No stress.
    £45 in 20p's :D
  • Is there a list of what banks provide them.

Certainly RBS and HSBC/First Direct do. I assume Natwest too since RBS do. Any other banks?

    Which RBS branches have them?

AFAIK Natwest don't have any type of paying in machines, prefering to concentrate on counter / letter box type services

I can't remember which one- think it is Paisley.
  • The local Natwest have paying in machines, but I think you can only pay into your account.

I can't say when or which branch unfortunately, but some RBS branches have paying in machines which allow you to pay cash, cheques and coin into your account - you can also pay your bills from your account.

It's usually the city centre branches which have the extra facilities.
Anything that I do say, is strictly my opinion :p

Just to inform you of the situation with NatWest:

NatWest's newest branch in the Liverpool One shopping complex gives some indication of how their branches of the future may look. There is an extensive lobby service which is available 24/7 housing various types of ATM. To my knowledge, this is the first time NatWest have offered such a service (the trailblazers in this area being Midland Bank of course back in the 1990s and, slightly later, the Co-op).

Most of the machines available in the NatWest lobby are the standard kind which dispense cash, give mini statements and accept paper (i.e. cheque/cash) deposits in an envelope which is then counted by staff later/next day.

However one of the machines accepts, counts and credits coin deposits to a NatWest account as well as counting cash notes and cheques and crediting them instantly. The machine looks like the 'Fast Cash' units inside Nationwide branches, and is very different to the HSBC variety because it is integrated into a full ATM, not a stand alone unit. The way you feed coins into it is slightly different too - instead of pouring them into a tray, you kind of chuck them into a box which reveals itself! And I *think* you need to have an account with an ATM card, and cannot just enter the account details manually.

During opening hours (which are extended and include Saturdays and Sundays) there is only one counter position in the branch, with the rest of the floor space being given over to interview rooms and desks. The counter position is of the fully-glazed variety and not the open plan/building society style counters which started to make an appearance recently in the NatWest network. This is because the one counter has to be able to handle both personal (i.e. low value) and business(high value) transactions so must be 100% secure.

And yes, this is a departure from NatWest policy even very recently - the emphasis was entirely on counter services, with old fashioned secure box units for cash/cheque deposits if you didn't want to wait. Even branches which have had a makeover very recently have this layout but, if the Liverpool example is anything to go by, another change may be on its way.

    Hope this helps!

PS. No idea of the situation at RBS branded branches, but I would be very surprised if it differed from NatWest.

It's the same machine I was referring to in my post :)

The only time you can pay something in without a card is if you have a paying in slip, or you are paying an RBS/Natwest/Ulster bill in line with normal procedures.

The machines were made to operate and look like a normal ATM on the outside so customers would be more willing to use them.

Makeovers are starting to happen in some branches, but as with most companies, the branches in the bigger/main city centres get everything first ;)
