Any account, as long as it's HSBC/First Direct and you know the sort code and a/c number.

Correct - any account with HSBC will do. Just make sure you don't do what I do and put the coins under the plastic tray rather than on it! :o

Does this apply to the Basic Bank Accounts that they offer as well?

On another note, I believe that they have similar machines at NatWest [at least the branch in LiverpoolOne does!]
  • HSBC in the Water gardens shopping centre in Harlow has a commission free coin counting machine. My plastic Budweiser bottle containing 5,800 coins came to £445 :)

  • I called the HSBC call centre yesterday and asked if there was a coin counting machine at any west London branches.
I was told that the coin counting machine is only available to customers who have a business account.

That's certainly not true for the one in Kingston. The staff there even showed us how to use it (um, put your card in, put your coins in, take your card out!) so it's not like we used it when we weren't supposed to.

Yeh its not true. You do have to have a HSBC (or maybe FD? not sure if they are accepted) account though.

I can confirm the HSBC machines can also be used by First Direct customers. The one in my branch wouldn't accept my FD savings account card though, it would only accept my FD debit card on my current account.
  • If you ring HSBC ask they should be able to find out where your nearest machine is.

If you live in Leeds, like me, the nearest machine is in Guisborough.

A 134 mile round trip up the A1 to save £2.40

I suggest the HSBC get a map and learn how to use it!.

There are coin paying in machines at the HSBC branches in Parliament Street in York and also High Street Northallerton. Both are closer to Leeds than Guisborough.
