  • On the automated phone system it said contract expires 10th march
    When should I start haggling?
Weve got entertainment, sports and fibre with evening and weekend and paying 71 currently. Should I be aiming for a lot cheaper?

10th February is your best date. When I've done this previously I've asked then and then given my 1 month notice on that date. That way you don't end up paying any undiscounted bills and you can cancel without a fee.

I don't know if you have Sky Q but have a look at the past few pages to make sure you're in the ballpark. From past experience you have to actually let it go off or at least get to disconnection to get the best deals. But appreciate that may be difficult if you end up losing broadband services too.

What you're paying now does sounds like a lot though - I got Sky Q install at my new house (doesn't even have a dish currently), an extra box (with multiroom subscription), Sports, Movies, Entertainment, Kids and Box Sets for £46 per month. £25 up front which is the admin fee and charge for both boxes. But bear in mind I was classed as a leaver as I left them a few months ago when I moved out of my old place. I don't have broadband as the fibre in the are is not the best at the moment but even adding that in it still brings me to around your amount but with the extra TV services listed above.

Has anyone haggled for just basic TV recently?
My current discounts are due to end in March. I've seen some people getting offers of £15pm for Sky Entertainment, but that seems to be when taking sports or broadband too.

    I'm currently paying £22:
    Sky Entertainment £19
    Box Sets £1
    Kids £1
    HD £1

From looking at future bills there seems to be an offer heading my way, as the price is only going up to £28, but I'm always up for a haggle! Has anyone got any recent experience of just basic TV deals?

That may be a partial month? If you don't have a May bill up yet, check the last bill listed and expand it to see the breakdown.

Mine runs out at the start of April and changes to:-

    Sky Entertainment = £27.00 (currently £15)
    Ultimate On Demand = £3.00
(Ultimate On Demand Discounted -£9.00 until Jan 2021)
    Sky HD = £1.00
(Sky HD Subscription Discounted -£4.00 until Oct 2020)

    Total May bill = £31.00

On checking my emails HD is an 18 month discount @£1 so perhaps your add-ons are the same as well. My Entertainment discount was for 12 months only.

It's now 12 months since we got our absolute BEST Sky TV deal as a result of ringing Sky and telling one of its representatives that after 15 years as a customer, we'd had enough of paying an ever-rising extortionate monthly amount for its service.

As Sky is widely regarded in the industry as one of the most incompetent outfits around, we weren't surprised to be offered a derisory reduction on our monthly bill by the Sky rep and he didn't seem at all surprised that we refused it.

So, as a result of that, we have in the past 12 months not spent 12 x £27 on Sky, a total of Three hundred and Twenty Four pounds.

Meanwhile, Sky having not received that £324, has written us a begging letter every month -- the latest arrived this morning.

It is emblazoned with the phrase "SPOILER ALERT: Great offers inside" (you can almost see the self-congratulatory smile on the face of whichever halfwit dreamt that up -- ooh, spoiler ahead!) and alongside the envelope's address window, there's a second window which shows the sum of £22 with a diagonal cross-out line through it, and then "Only £17 a month" in very very large type. The back of the envelope carries the text: "Add the TV you love for less than you think".

Well, um, what we think is that we don't, never have, and never will "love" Sky TV. Nor have we sat down at any time in the past 12 months to waste our time "thinking" about the cost. Each month, Sky's hapless "SPOILER ALERT" begging letter shows the price: in just 12 months, it's gone from a crossed-out £22 / Only £11 a month to ditto/Only £15 a month and now Only £17 a month.. . Evidence, were ever any needed, of just how meaningless this company's promises actually are: the minimum monthly subscription even on discount continually goes up and up and up. Sky will bleed you dry if you let it.

Anyway. £324 our gain, thanks to Sky's management being so collectively stupid that it can't hang onto customers when it has them, and has to devote time and money mailing out pathetic begging letters to them after they've left.

Thanks Colin, there's a partial month for March bill of £23ish, with the £28 starting from April. The bills list "in contract discount" under everything., so I assume I'll be receiving an offer from them soon.

The ongoing price works out as
    Entertainment £20
    Box Sets £3
    Kids £2
    HD £3

Looks like you've got a great deal there, I'll definitely try to get Entertainment for £15 now I know it's achievable without taking Sports, broadband etc.

Incompetent? Just think how much revenue they could have made rather than the paltry £13.6 BILLION in 2018 they somehow managed.

The rest of your post is even worse that that small snippet I'm afraid.

I posted a week or 2 ago about my Sky offer & being gutted that I missed out on a Virgin Media offer. So just an update for info....

They emailed with their "Last chance to keep Sky" offer:

    Sky Entertainment
    Sports
    Cinema

    £43 per month.

Assuming they'd give me kids & HD for £1 each as per every other offer I received I was really tempted. I also have an offer for Netflix for another 12 months so £48 all in.

I would have had to pay £13 for my extra Q box & £27 for Superfast BB so would've been £88.

Virgin Media have now sorted out my address so I have just signed up to their ultimate oomph package - full tv, 2 boxes, phone line with calls, BB & unlimited sim (saving me £10pm) for £89pm. Comes with potential £165 Topcashback & £100 credit to my 1st bill by Virgin Media less the £35 set up fee. All going well should be up in running in 2 weeks - 12 month contract. Works out under £62pm over the year.

Looking forward to trying something different.
  • Hi

apologies if this is an oft asked question but how do I get through to live chat. Searched for ages in the help/my account section and only get an option for the phone number and google wasn't helpful either.

I'm sure I'm missing something obvious but can't see live chat anywhere...
