Windows 10 installed in spite of me trying to stop it!

I have just spent the last hour and a half watching Windows 10 automatically installing itself on my machine, after I had closed the box and even stopped it in task manager.
This has happened without my permission - I was quite happy with Windows 7 - and it obviously has not gone according to plan, because it has spent the last ten minutes searching for a "compatible display driver".
Has this happened to anyone else?
Do we no longer have a choice in these matters?
Will my machine be able to run Windows 10 OK?:mad::mad:

Step one:
Let win 10 install and log in
Step two:
go to "Settings" then "Updates & Security" then "Recovery" and select "Go back to Windows 7"
Step three
Wait while Windows 7 is restored...

I've had lots of phone calls about this this week; it appears most have missed the "Windows 10 will be installed at 2am on random-day-of-week" popup.
Quickest way to back out of this is to decline the T&C.0 -
FOrmat the C:\ drive an install Linux Mint.0

If you really don't want to keep Windows 10 (the update to which is free until 29th July), then you can roll it back to Windows 7. When you've done that run Never10 from GRC.
Windows 10 takes some getting used to, but you'll find a lot of similarity with Windows 7...0 -

Yes. See HERE.
As for the Display Driver (did your screen also go to 1024x768?), go into Control Panel>Device Manager>Display adapters, and double click the listed adapter (in my case AMD Radeon HD 857D), then click the Driver tab.
Then click "Update Driver".
Choose the top option "Search automatically for updated driver software."
It'll probably take a while (mine took about 30 minutes), but it'll install a more suitable driver, which will correct the screen resolution problem.
the screen will briefly blank out a few times, as the new driver is installed, but it'll sort itself out.0 -
Thanks for all the answers folks.
I went through all the blue screens asking me to choose various options.
The whole thing seems to have stabilised now, the icons are back to their usual size and no more warnings about the display.
I think I am going to stick with it for now, because it is resembling my old W7 layout (apart from a few things), and the machine seems to boot up and shut down faster.
I will give it a go.0 -
If you want it to look exactly like W7, install Classic Shell and choose "Windows 7 style".0

Or just get rid of the computer and use a pen and paper instead...0 -
Windows 10 is a vast improvement, 7 won't be supported for as long as XP was, just upgrade, use Classic Shell (free) if you can't stand the (very good) new start menu.0

Better still, get a Sinclair ZX800
