well what sort of answer did you expect , a magician jumping out of a box and waving his wand and freeing your machine from upgrades?
and to answer this:
"It's funny, for some quaint reason, I'd always assumed paying for it made the laptop mine. It seems I was wrong and it's actually owned by Microsoft. "

Quickest way to back out of this is to decline the T&C.
my windows 10 update was attempted on Friday, I always click off the pop-up option, this time I had to wait until I got the T&Cs, which I declined, and my laptop has gone back to its old OS.
Will this happen again?0 -
It's funny, for some quaint reason, I'd always assumed paying for it made the laptop mine. It seems I was wrong and it's actually owned by Microsoft.
The laptop hardware belongs to you. The software you have a licence to use, you do not own it.Proud member of the wokerati, though I don't eat tofu.Home is where my books are.Solar PV 5.2kWp system, SE facing, >1% shading, installed March 2019.Mortgage free July 20230 -

Thank you. Having been using computers since pre-cp/m days I was actually aware of that. I did not, however, consciously grant Microfraud the right to interrupt my working day at its say-so, rob my machine of a useful function and then waste several hours of my working time setting up software simply because it suits their marketing plans.
And to think I said I wouldn't argue with fanbois. Well I won't from now on, so feel free have at it.0 -

No argument really - Yes, it's annoying that MS decided to go down the route of updating machines without giving the unaware an opt in. A step to far by MS? Well, yes, I can understand what they are trying to do, but, not why they are doing it with this latest method.
I can understand your particular annoyance in a work situation and your need to vent. However, labelling anyone who posts anything positive about W10 'fanbois' doesn't really forward the point.
I think it being a good OS and the delivery method, are two separate discussions.Drinking Rum before 10am makes you

I wonder how long it will be before Micro$haft start charging a monthly fee to access their 'free' software?0

I am putting a note in my diary to laugh at the first post from someone complaining that they now have to pay for the upgrade. Sadly I know that many less technically literate people are being 'swayed' into not upgrading by those giving out the very poor advice of blindly telling them not to.
The bottom line is that unless you are in the tiny minority that have a very specific reason for not upgrading then you should definitely upgrade ... and do it while it is still 'free'.
And while I usually ignore childish, churlish and disingenuous arguments from halfwits the above is pure common sense and nothing to do with 'fanboi' (note the correct spelling).IITYYHTBMAD0 -
I had been holding back on W10 (was on 8.1) but last week found it had loaded automatically.
First impressions are good - undoing the mistakes of 8 and 8.1 - start up seems faster and better desk top and File Manager is back.Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill0
