It's easy to assume there will be time to make things up to people later......but it isn't always the case.

My grandad died shortly after his 41st birthday.. you never know when the grim reaper will come knocking.. My uncle died shortly after his 41st birthday.. of the same thing coincidentally.. it happens.. this is why you shouldn't destroy relationships you will be sad to not have the opportunity to continue.

LilElvis.. i don't have 'strength of Character' I've just got to the point in my life where I will not let others dictate and make me miserable.. it is my life not theirs and noone has any right to steal my happiness. I'm actually a big blubbering doofus type mess.. All it takes is a sense of self preservation and an unwillingness to allow others to rule my life.. I'm not a child (even though I do behave like one) and I will not be treated as one.

You don't have to wait for a particular birthday to have a holiday with someone.

You can build up many happy memories just by spending time with a person - it doesn't have to be a holiday in a particular place.

It doesn't sound as if the holiday, as planned, with result in any happy memories for anyone involved.

If you can not do it you can not do it and I understand, certain things we are unable to cope with. Hope you will find piece in your head to manage it though , it would be very therapeutic for you , your mother (she must have major issues to get this type of relationship with daughter )and the best ever present for your father.
