Pooky what about Charity Shops for fabric or clothes to recycyle into bags ? Just a thought.

Thanks for the pattern Rikki and congratulations Pooky on your finished products!

I would encourage everyone to use their own bags and to the poster who said that some shops won't allow you to use your own, ask the Manager what law allows them to do this!

In Ireland we have had a plastic bag tax for several years it started at €.15c and is now €.22c and it has been the greatest thing ever...throw away people no longer throw bags as they have to pay for the next one...I was so annoyed with OH this morning as he 'forgot' to take a bag from the car and paid the tax to carry stuff he could have just have easily taken in one hand. I have lots of different types of bags which I take shopping and it becomes a habit very quickly to put them back in the car when the shopping is put away. Rant over....I will certainly be making some of these bags to carry in my handbag when not taking the car, and as gifts to my more careless friends.

Pooky this is very inspiring thanks for sharing!

I had only one thought keeping in mind your 'handles are part of the bag' and that is could the handles be made to go front and back instead of coming up on the sides. Then a rectangle shape is cut out and sewn up for the hands to go through with the top of it something like this: __l[___]l__
  • Thanks pooky Brill idea even a no-sewer like me should be able to make one now to find all that material I have stashed.

Hi everyone. I've done my best to be an old style person, dead easy really, and I came accross this site today , with easy instructions to make a "not a plastic" bag. made three since lunch time, using left over fabric from a previous life, including one made with calico and lined with some gorgeous red silk! was going to give it to DD but maybe I'll keep that one for myself.
Do have a shot, very easy and most satisfying,. The site is http://www.allfreecrafts.com/sewing/shopping-bag.shtml:j
  • That looks like a good pattern, I shall give it a go as I have lots of fabric laying around doing nothing, might as well put it to some use.

    Thanks!
Anyone fancy buying my degree? It will only cost you £18k.
