Me too. So far I've been able to fix every installation by checking the log files and event viewer and Googling the error codes, but it's taken hours and hours of searching and trying different things... and waiting and waiting as you have no idea what your PC is actually doing when it says it's "checking for updates". There's no clear simple way to fix the problem (that I've come across).

I think all the affected installations have been Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit, but that's just because everyone I know seems to have that version. I guess it would be the most popular.

    not in this case

I recon it's all versions - I've seen it on Pro and Home Premium, 32- and 64-bit versions of both...

did you use the third bat file? did you reboot the machine when it completed? did you check that BITS service was running before checking for updates? have you changed the update settings from auto to notify? Some clarity on what you have/have not done would help....

That's interesting GunJack. My Win 7 Ultimate 32 bit laptop was affected by the frozen 'checking for updates' syndrome so I think it is all versions of Win 7 potentially affected. After seeing your comment I checked the BITS service and it was set to Automatic - Delayed Start. So I've reset it to Automatic and whether coincidence or not, the updates are working fine again now.

A word of warning - even when you set it to Auto, for some unknown reason it WILL reset to manual, and part of the problem seems to be that WU doesn't activate it when you start up checking for updates, at least until updates are back on track. This makes it essential to manually check and activate if necessary BEFORE running WU.....

Good work GeeBee38, it's due to be wet this weekend so may give it another go, and leave it running for days.
I was hoping to get £40 for the pc, but it's costing me more than that in leccy. :(
But it ain't gunna beat me.

As to your link I got this rather intriguing message.
Win 8.1 64bit using Waterfox with NoScript and uBlock Origin.
Your access to this site has been limited

Your access to this service has been temporarily limited. Please try again in a few minutes. (HTTP response code 503)
Reason: Exceeded the maximum number of page not found errors per minute for humans.
Important note for site admins: If you are the administrator of this website note that your access has been limited because you broke one of the Wordfence firewall rules. The reason you access was limited is: "Exceeded the maximum number of page not found errors per minute for humans.".

If this is a false positive, meaning that your access to your own site has been limited incorrectly, then you will need to regain access to your site, go to the Wordfence "options" page, go to the section for Firewall Rules and disable the rule that caused you to be blocked. For example, if you were blocked because it was detected that you are a fake Google crawler, then disable the rule that blocks fake google crawlers. Or if you were blocked because you were accessing your site too quickly, then increase the number of accesses allowed per minute.

If you're still having trouble, then simply disable the Wordfence firewall and you will still benefit from the other security features that Wordfence provides.

If you are a site administrator and have been accidentally locked out, please enter your email in the box below and click "Send". If the email address you enter belongs to a known site administrator or someone set to receive Wordfence alerts, we will send you an email to help you regain access. Please read this FAQ entry if this does not work.

This response was generated by Wordfence.

I've got no idea, :) I thought I'd seen most things.

I put it up in the hope that some clever person will respond.
