p.s. I've done many installs over the years and never encountered anything like the trouble I've had over the last couple of weeks.

Me neither. I first noticed problems with Windows Update in Windows 7 last December. Since then, I've seen several other Windows 7 machines struggle to download updates. :-/

I don't want you all to throw rocks at me... but updates are one thing that Linux does really well... (*runs for cover*)

What? You type one command and every application on your PC updates automatically? And it never freezes? :p

    (Anyway... back to Windows... :))

I remember the Ubuntu updates soon after I started messing with computers, ( I was a very late arriver) probably 2007, it was a total lottery regarding what would happen.
Things have improved, so that it is now very good.

In my case I was hoping to sell the pc as a cheapie, I also assumed that Win 7 would be more popular than Win 10.
    Personally, I don't have a problem with Win 10.

Can't see it selling very quickly with a Linux distro installed. :)
    Move along, nothing to see.

I remember trying Ubuntu when it first came out (and a few times since). I never liked it. It's unnecessarily complicated and bloated. I also had problems with several other Linux distros until I found the right one for me. Most of them didn't even last a month before I broke them!

Yeah... there's a lot of value in a Windows licence. It doesn't depreciate as quickly as the hardware does.

I've just had another W7 mess around like this.... it seems to be getting worse on new installs/installs that aren't kept up-to-date properly.

I've found the .BAT files and methods in this thread work the most frequently at sorting the problem. One thing to always check ( and set properly) is the BITS service, ensure it's set to start automatically and that it's running before checking for updates :) It can be a faff, but I've not been defeated to do a re-install as yet....

I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple :D
