Just let it run. It does take absolute ages first time. I have left a machine run overnight before now.
BTW there are 250+ updates to bring a new install of Windows 7 SP1 up to dateThis is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
That happens a lot. Windows Update is pretty rubbish. But there are a lot of updates available for Windows 7 now. Five hours seems too long to still be checking for updates, though.
The first thing I'd try is to install KB3102810 and then Service Pack 1. They're available for separate download on Microsoft.com if Windows Update won't work.
Otherwise, try the suggestions in my post on a different thread here:

In windows 7 go look in c:\windows\windowsupdate.log - it will tell you what its doing. If you don't understand it that's ok - just look at the date and time on the file and make sure its not been hours since it was last updated.0

I had exactly the same problem last week. I used this:
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows7/open-the-windows-update-troubleshooter
Then let windows updates run over night on the schedule rather than via a manual check. When it came to 3am they finally installed. Make sure your pc is set to never sleep.0 -
Thank you everyone, it's still stuck, i will have a look at the advice you have given, i'll be back later0

Here is what i have found, i have googled the error code and tried everything to fix it
Thank you0 -
This is Microsoft's way of suggesting you try Windows10. Why not? If you've just installed 7.If you put your general location in your Profile, somebody here may be able to come and help you.0

I was on that thread.
It has run for hours, Windows update agent, the trouble shooter, update readiness tool etc, but no updates, abandoned it until this morning.
It is now saying not activated!!!
Definitely not a dodgy licence.Last year I had an old, seldom used, netbook on 7 that got stuck checking for updates. I spent days trying and nothing worked. Eventually I just chucked 10 on it instead
I was looking to sell it as a cheap pc, I was thinking Win 7 more saleable than Win10?Move along, nothing to see.0
