I'm on Home Premium 64bit.
I've been using the 7 + SP1 usb, then reinstalled with the original Win 7 disk, now back to the 7 + SP1 usb.
Both have been used multiple times in the past.
Is it going to sell quicker if I bung on Win 10?
It's a good thing this is a 'hobby', I dread to think what this would be costing me if it was for a customer.Move along, nothing to see.0 -

You can fix this problem by reverting to an old system restore point the day before you last did a successful windows update (last month?). This worked for me. Good luck.0

There is a workaround, as I discovered. Download two updates before starting the installation process, KB3083710 and KB3102810, and copy them to a USB flash drive. Install Windows 7 with SP1 and leave the network cable disconnected. Install those two updates from the flash drive before connecting to the network and running Windows Update for the first time, and you can cut that horrendous delay down to a matter of a few minutes.0 -
part of the problem is that even when fixed, the first check for updates can take hours, which can lead you to trying other things....it's very annoying.... even installing the june and december updated clients doesn't always make it faster......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......
I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple0 -

How long should you leave it between each attempted *fix*?

It's getting chucked back into the other room.
bo bos time, back to work tomorrow.Move along, nothing to see.0 -

Will re-install and try this when I next have a go at it.

spud, the last couple have taken between 12 and 24 hours (one a client's, one mine) but once updated the next check took 15-20 mins.. I know, I know, about time ms sorted it out definitively ......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......

Me too. So far I've been able to fix every installation by checking the log files and event viewer and Googling the error codes, but it's taken hours and hours of searching and trying different things... and waiting and waiting as you have no idea what your PC is actually doing when it says it's "checking for updates". There's no clear simple way to fix the problem (that I've come across).
I think all the affected installations have been Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit, but that's just because everyone I know seems to have that version. I guess it would be the most popular.0
