Forgot to add, adjust the temporarily power settings so the PC does not power down, run Windows update once new the install is completed and check it every few hours or so and restart as required. It takes time but will get there.

And don't forget to install some AV software, Microsoft Essentials, Avast etc before you run Windows Update.

Did you install SP1 yourself while trying to fix this problem, or was it already installed? If the latter, I'd try uninstalling it, rebooting, checking for updates and then installing any that are available except SP1. Reboot, then try installing the remaining updates.

Or just give up and go for a reinstall. There's only so much time you can waste trying to fix these irritating problems!

    I feel your pain. :)
Early this afternoon, I reinstalled Win 7, yet again, but this time used the original Win 7 disk, without SP1, done all the little tricks, 5 hrs later no sign of any updates.

p.s. I've done many installs over the years and never encountered anything like the trouble I've had over the last couple of weeks.
    Move along, nothing to see.

The problem is it's not even connecting to the update servers.
See GeeBee38's screenprint, post #1, I've had it running like this for many hours.

Yes, correct, you're right, it is just searching for the updates, not installing any, windows won't even find any updates to install
