    Lambyr - huge congratulations!! I know that your family have some rather outdated views (to put it politely) but they're going to have to know at some point once you're married so is it worth dealing with the fallout now or would it cause too many problems for your mum? Maybe if you tell them now they'll decide that they've got somewhere else that they really, really need to be for Christmas :D

    Ginger - I read it as 'soup' as well and was a little confused.

    Elsien - get your decorations put up!!! You don't want the effort of getting them down from the loft to be wasted.

    We got our tree and put decorations up last weekend, I love the fact that I can now see our flat from about halfway down our road :rotfl:

    Ooh exciting news!! Congratulations lambyr :D:D I would be wearing that ring with pride no matter who was in the house, and if they have a problem with anything they are welcome to go elsewhere where their views are more tolerated (like the 16th century).
  • Morning code. I pulled down my basket of various Christmas bits this morning to get the box of cards out and realised they weren't there. Discovered they are still on my desk in the office from a year ago :o Will write some out and send them at lunchtime, I only do a few family members and about three friends so it won't take long.

    Registered on the government website and been looking at my NI record back to when I was 16, all available online. Fascinating stuff. Seems I already have my 30 years of contributions for the basic state pension due to working full time during the university holidays when I was an undergraduate..

    Sorry I didn't get back; started feeling unwell again. The cough came back hopefully not as bad as before, but am feeling rough.

    Anyway, did anyone try this?,

    It does have a bit of a trick in it, so there are two answers.

    Both are penguined below the quote.

    Has anyone seen this? It's really good!

    But be warned! It looks easy at first, but you have to look very, very carefully!

    I fell into the trap of not looking carefully, so I got it wrong, even though the method was ok.

    Have fun, chickadees! :rotfl:

    Penguin answer to flower puzzle:

    It's 81.
    However, if you didn't realise there are only 4 petals on the fourth blue flower, indicating that its value is 4 instead of 5, then the answer is 101...... Read below.......

    "Because the puzzle tells us that the red flower is worth 20, a blue flower with five petals is worth five, and two yellow flowers are worth two.
    In the final line there is one yellow flower added to one red flower multiplied by one blue flower with four petals, making the equation 1 + 20 x 4.
    You multiply 20 by four, to get 80, and then add the one to get the final answer of 81
    However, Professor Poladian did warn that puzzles like this can have more than one correct answer, as there is not enough information to confirm that the number of petals on a flower changes its value.
    If you were to disregard the number of petals on the blue flower, you would come up with an entirely different answer of 101"

    End penguin

    That first puzzle, I posted it before I'd had a go at it myself, then started to feel ill, so couldn't do it. I'll try again later.

    Here's another one which can be put in terms of an algebraic equation to get the solution. This is more the sort of thing I like doing, because the fun is working out the equation.
    I've done this one and checked it.

    Tip : like all good examiners say, read the question, read it again, then read it a third time before you attempt it! :D

    Julie baked three fewer cupcakes than Steph, who made three times as many as Richard, who baked 15% as many as Jess. If they averaged 30 cupcakes each, how many did Steph bake?

    If you get stuck, there is a helpful hint which I have penguined here:
    if you are stuck, it may be because you have misunderstood how many Richard baked. "Richard baked 15% as many as Jess" ....... This means the number he baked was 15% of the number that Jess baked.

    Also, I found the easiest way to make the equation was to put all the numbers of cakes baked by each person into terms of Richard's, which I called R. For example, Steph would be 3R, as she baked three times as many as Richard did.

    End penguin.

    I love :eek:

  • That one reduced down to algebra quite easily and solves with positive integer numbers of cakes for all parties, so I'm confident I've got the right answer this time :D

    Answer penguin : Steph baked 27

    Penguin reply to PyxisAgain, my method was a little haphazard but I seem to have got their eventually.

    There are 120 cupcakes in total.
    If you work out how many Richard baked it gives you the others' totals

    Using Richard as 1, Julie becomes 3R-3, Steph is 3R and Jess is 6.66R

    That gave me a total of 13.6R-3 so I divided 120 by 13.6, giving me 8.8. I presumed Richard made full cupcakes so used him making 9 as my starting point.

    Richard = 9
    Steph = 27 (9x3)
    Julie = 24 (27-3)
    Jess = 60 (9%0.15)

    Those added up to 120 so I presume that's correct even if my working out was a little messy :D

    Yes! :T

    Ono and Izadora, you're both right!

    By the way, I went to the website where I got the first puzzle, and there was a misprint in what the poster on that site posted for the conundrum. Someone else had written something different......

    It was each boy was given 12 sweets, not 10..

    I'll have a go at it later, as I'm suffering at the mo. :(

    Well that's true. I didn't really think I'd ever be in a serious relationship, let alone engaged!

    But I do need to knuckle down with projects and work. Been far too easily distracted this year and time does seem to be flying by.

    Hope you feel better soon, Pyxis!
    Penguin for Lambyr....

    I feel so angry that this has been put on you again.
    Why on earth did you agree to it? :(:(:(

    if you really can't get out of having the hordes descend on you this year, then I really would suggest you do the following, as it is so unfair to expect you to deal single handedly with the horde....

    #Make a list of what you want each person to bring in the way of food and drink, and preferably most of it already cooked.
    #Ask them to all bring their own sheets, pillows,etc.
    #Say you'll make a rota of what chores each person is expected to do over whatever length of time they're staying for. Chores include cooking, serving, washing up, drinks duty, making pots of tea,
    clearing up, etc. and for every meal including breakfast.

    In fact if you send them the rota ASAP, at least they're shown the amount of work they're expecting YOU to do all on your own.

    Also, it might put them off coming!

    Hmmm, I may not have the split of girls and boys quite right then. That would mean Santa now has minus 448 sweets!! Although, seeing as he's clearly a sexist so-and-so, he deserves to be in debt.
