    I've found a couple online, the sort of Mindbender quiz I used to like doing.

    Here's one.......

    One day Santa gives each girl ten sweets and each boy 10 sweets.
    Of 439 children - four fifths girls and two thirds boys are allowed to take sweets. If he started with 4000 sweets, how many has he left?

    The answer is in my next post as a penguin, but no cheating! :D

    Show off! :mad:

    Actually, that's the sort of thing I tried and failed at last night. :o
    :huh: Don't know what I'm doing, but doing it anyway... :huh:

    My head hurts and I can't remember how to work out the split of boys and girls that make up the 439 children. How on earth did I manage to get an A for GCSE?

    Nope. I do not maths.

    So yesterday, I said I needed a lottery win and today I got one. A whole £3. I think maybe I need to be more specific in my wishes. :rotfl:

    I can't work it out either, it feels like there's a bit of information missing.

    it feels like there's a bit of information missing.

    I kept re-reading it thinking that I'd missed something and then realised that the fractions of children who received sweets must mean that you can work out how many you need in each group. How to use those fractions is completely beyond me though :rotfl:
  • The use of "give" and "take" in the question is interesting and I wonder if it's deliberate.

    I tried working out on the basis that all the sweets were gone and calculating how many boys and girls there would have to be for them to be able to take them in that ratio, but to solve the equation out it ended up with there being 805 girls and -366 boys (total 439), then if 4/5ths of the girls (644) get ten sweets and 2/3rds (-244) of the boys get ten sweets, 4000 sweets are distributed.

    At that point I gave up, for obvious reasons :rotfl:

    Has anyone seen this? It's really good!

    But be warned! It looks easy at first, but you have to look very, very carefully!

    I fell into the trap of not looking carefully, so I got it wrong, even though the method was ok.

    Have fun, chickadees! :rotfl:

    I think I have an answer. It was done in a very haphazard way but if it's correct I don't care :D

    Penguin answerI figured that the girls' group had to be divisible by 5 and the boys' group had to be divisible by 3 so used that as a starting point for working out how many were in each group. Fortunately, seeing as I have no idea what formula would work it out for me, I started with 200 girls so it didn't take too long as I only had to increase by one 5-person increment until I found that 439-205 meant you had two groups which could be split into the correct fractions without ending up with bits of people.

    Girls = 205
    Boys = 234

    164 girls and 156 boys were allowed sweets, totalling 3,200 sweets handed out.

    Santa therefore had 800 sweets left.
    End Penguin
  • I bought something on ebay end of the week before last and it still hadn't turned up this morning, so I sent the seller a message saying "have you sent it? has it been returned to you?" (etc)

    Inevitably, it arrived with the postman a few minutes ago :o

    Just left Christmas lunch and had a wander around the Christmas markets listening to Christmas songs and looking at the pretty lights, instead of going to the pub. Feeling very Christmassy now. Pretty sure my body will thank me in the morning too :rotfl:
